(25,997 posts)Joe Biden provides the material himself, and then his supporters call it a smear when others point it out. Im 65, and Id never heard that line before - yet he assumed someone much younger would understand. Thats the thing about attempting folksy; you run the chance of coming off as insulting or obtuse.

(25,493 posts)For the sake of argument, if someone like Yang used a phrase that some older voters wouldn't understand, do the same standards apply? Is that insulting as well?
Or does it only apply to older candidates making statements that 100% of the audience won't get?
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(25,997 posts)Ill weigh in if that hypothetical situation if it ever advances past the straw-man stage.

(25,493 posts)If we're only going to apply the "dumb down what you say" rule to certain candidates, I think that's a problem. Obviously, you don't and that's fine.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(25,997 posts)Its a straw man. Theoretically, I believe it would be wrong for a younger candidate to ridicule someone for not understanding a hip cultural reference. Let me know when / if it ever happens.

(21,648 posts)either, but I was never a fan of John Wayne or of westerns
However, without knowing the source of the comment, I could tell that the words themselves were so out of mainstream conversation that they had to benan intentional exaggeration to make a joke. That was further made clear by his soft tone when saying them. His young audience perceived it as a joke, too, and laughed. They probably did not know the source and chalked it up to "old guy" talk, meant to be funny, not insulting.
We're shooting ouselves in the foot by attacking each other over things like this. Time to stop looking for insults to get enraged over among our own..
Instead of claiming misogyny or racism over this remark, it's more productive to have a rational discussion over whether this kind of comment can hurt him in the general election and weigh that against his considerable experience for handling the mess Trump has made. Also discus his ability to draw votes, or not, across the country.
Weigh his chances in the general vs. the chances of candidates who must continually defend and explain their positions while identifying with a term that the majority of Americans automatically reject, e.g. socialism. Personally, I support some social-economic changes, but tagging them with the word "socialism" invites rejection. Please don't flood me with explanations of what it means; I get it. But the general population will not.
A good running mate for Biden could help him in the general, like Klobuchar. Bernie and Eluzabeth can still promote their changes from within the Senate if they don't win the nomination.
Just stop the cannibalistic fights, please. They play into the Trump strategy of division.

(13,390 posts)it's probably best to find something else to say. I don't understand how an experienced politician has this much trouble with a very easy rule of thumb. Trump has never been held accountable and I am not abou5t to give the benefit of the doubt to a Democrat for something that I have thought about Trump all along. If you don't want to see a particular behavior among kids bullying each other, it is absolutely a deal breaker for a candidate.

I suspect that sometime in the near future, Joe will once again use some phrase, slang or idiom from two generations ago and spark frantic pecking and swiping at smartphones, after which one generation will sagely claim to have known about it all along while another will quickly adopt it as the latest cool thing.
Ah, the agony of having a candidate who knows more than, "Gimme!" and grade school bully nicknames.

(109,000 posts)"Dog-faced"? He should have known better. His famous empathy was missing in that moment. He should have realized that she had to be brave to stand up and ask that question at all. She deserved a thoughtful response, not a joke that could come off as an insult.
Seems like a dumb way to ask for college students' votes.
