Is Sanders an election-year disaster waiting to happen?

Former senator Christopher J. Dodd (Conn.), a supporter of former vice president Joe Biden, has an answer: If Sanders is the Democratic nominee, he will have a “very difficult time” beating President Trump and will pose a “serious threat to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s ability to retain control of the House,” Axios reported.

Dodd’s assessment was echoed by Ami Bera (Calif.), co-chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Frontline program, which raises funds to reelect Democratic House members. During an interview with BuzzFeed News this week, Bera said, “If Bernie Sanders is our nominee, it’ll make a lot of these Trump districts that we picked up extremely competitive and probably does put our House majority in jeopardy.

The bleakest assessment came from Marshall Matz, a policy adviser for Sen. George McGovern’s 1972 presidential bid, who said that if Sanders is nominated, Democrats should expect the sort of landslide loss that McGovern suffered to President Richard M. Nixon. “He would not just lose but would lose badly,” Matz told the Stamford Advocate.

Copying from another post of mine:

-----

I wrote about this in my post in the thread at https://www.democraticunderground.com/1287486770

The OP had quoted from an article that said:

Ideologues are elected more often than they used to be. Outsiders are elected more often, too. And the percentage of true swing voters is shrinking, Utych said. So does that mean someone like Sanders is more electable and someone like former Vice President Joe Biden is less electable? Electability here becomes a game of divining which group is more important to winning — swing voters or the partisan base. But that’s no more accurate than trying to estimate how sexist your neighbors are. “Which segment is bigger … there’s not great information on that,” Utych said. “Anything you say is just guessing.”

And in my agreement, I expanded on it this way:

We really don't know which group gets us more votes. Biden {or your moderate of choice} and Sanders (i.e. our two extremes) would both get the vote of virtually every true Dem (certainly when the alternative is Trump). But beyond that, what gets us more votes... appealing to the moderate middle and "reasonable" Republicans? or appealing to the more extreme left partisans and the anti-establishment outsiders who want to shake things up? In 2016, we attempted to appeal to the moderate middle, while Trump went for the highly partisan and anti-establishment group. We lost that one. Something to think about.

As I've also said elsewhere, I think come November, it is highly likely that any Dem candidate gets all the states Hillary did... yes, even Sanders, who I think is actually positioned pretty well. Some voters in those states may like Hillary more than Bernie, others may like Bernie more than Hillary, but either way, enough of them don't like Trump that they even chose a candidate in 2016 who was underwater in favorables (that is, to get as close as she did, she actually had to get many votes from people who didn't particularly like her in those states). So I think all those "anti Trump" states likewise go to Bernie. If anything, the demographics favor Bernie more this time, because 4 years later, we have a new influx of voters who were too young to be eligible to vote last time, and the youth vote heavily favors Sanders.

So to me, the big variable as to whether or not Bernie can beat Trump is whether he can sufficiently out-perform Hillary to be able to beat Trump in at least three of these states: Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, and Florida. I think he has enough working class appeal to win that chunk of what Hillary couldn't in at least three of those states. I think most if not all of our other candidates do as well. So I am optimistic.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

6. Risk either way
Sun Feb 9, 2020, 05:58 PM

Its risk / reward.

Bernie is a definitely a riskier bet, but the potential for reward is greater, e.g. the momentum / enthusiasm of his supporters could carry us thru like Turd in 2016.

Biden is a safe bet, bu the potential for low returns is greater, e.g. we lose excitement / momentum.

We need to take the best choice given the circumstances then go all in.

If you look at supporters, young people came out in large numbers. They split for Bernie and Pete but they came out for change. Both are outside the Democratic Establishment although definitely different political approaches and it was a very impressive result for Pete. However, the demographics of the Vote change the picture of turn out in Iowa. I suspect without actual numbers (note its just an opinion) that if one examined the statistics of first time caucus attendees it would be very skewed as well to show that younger first time voters were way up.

http://www.mtv.com/news/3155194/iowa-caucus-2020-young-voters/

The overall turn out was at 2016 levels because the older voters and people not arguing for the type of change represented by two outsiders did not come out or came out in reduced numbers. Maybe that is because they are not enamored with the more moderate candidates who claim them as their base. Maybe its something else. I am not arguing here against any specific candidate and wont in this Primary Season.

The question of turn out is important overall in beating trump. Will high numbers including these excited young come out for the end democratic candidate. Will the others who are part of the demographic who did not show in the caucus to make it a record turn out end up voting regardless of candidate. I would assume so because older people have the time and usually vote. However, regardless, it is a good sign that younger voters are coming out in high numbers and the fact they are voting for democratic non-establishment candidates is a good indication that the claims that progressives and non-establishment candidates increase the turn out has some evidence in its favor. Regardless, larger numbers of young voters are good for whoever ends up as our candidate be it Amy, Bernie, Elizabeth, Joe, or Pete (alphabetical order) or one of the outlying candidates like Andrew, Steyer or Bloomberg.

You have seemed reasonable in the past, take faith from the fact that the turn out was not uniformly low although not favoring your preferred candidates at this moment.

I mean, yes, we could say that we get the worst possible nominee, the one the Rs would pick for us, and he wins anyway. But that would mean things were equal with the media, etc. Also they united behind Dotard (and many in fact are risking the long term reputations) but Democrats are not like that. There were Rs who couldn't bring themselves to vote for the Dotard. With Ds, that could be a larger segment. (Not DUers, but the regular don't-pay-attention-until-October of Election year Ds.

Sun Feb 9, 2020, 07:08 PM

Why is it that the Democrats always have to play safe, choose the "acceptable" candidate to appeal to Republicans. They never vote for Democrats - repeat never. When Democrats win it's because they move the infrequent voter to get out and vote. Joe holds no to zero appeal to young voters. And Bernie does. Maybe if the eventual Democratic candidate doesn't pull a Tim "Mr. Milquetoast" Kaine onto the ticket, but a truly progressive running mate, should a "centrist" get the nomination, then there will be enthusiasm for the ticket. I think, despite all the naysayers, that a Bernie lead ticket could win. Most people in the upper midwest get the Con by now - especially a lot of farmers, and although hard to admit they were wrong, the grievance of government that ignores the dwindling rural condition still exists. Plenty of communities continue to see their rural hospitals close, job opps quickly vanishing, and whole towns being slowly removed from the map. They also see climate change in ever increasing flooding, drought, and other measurable environmental impacts. And they know that they are hanging on by a thread. So why don't more Democratic candidates come up with plans to address all the disparities, and the constant attacks on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, etc. that come from the right, and now Pete's call to address the deficit. Yes, indeed, Wall Street Pete - because when it's Republican's in power concern for deficits goes away with the invisible hand of the market, but let a Democrat take office and the only concern of the Republithugs are deficits, deficits, deficits! Enough already. Sure Pete, step up son, address the deficits created in the past three years - rescind the Trump tax cuts, and go and claw back the ill gotten gains from the Corps and Uber rich. And while you're at it propose a minimum corporate tax of 10 to 15% such that Amazon, Google, GE, and others never have a zero tax situation in any year. Then maybe we can "focus on family issues" as the GOP so likes to proclaim, but put some policy and dollars behind it - so that infrastructure is rebuilt, schools are upgraded, and communities are rebuilt.

So the answer to the question is a resounding no. He has an excellent chance at winning. That article claims 37%, but I've read 40% in other sources. Either way, a difference of 3 points. Big whoop.

And don't think for a minute that Sanders won't bring them out in force. This is the most politically active generation in decades. And with Sanders leading the charge, oh yeah, they'll come out. Probably stronger than they would for any other candidate.

He drew significantly less of the vote than 2016. He should have had the same almost half, while the rest were fighting for the scraps.

Either way, young people's turnout is terrible 36% per the census well below the overall 53.4% (an improvement from the dismal 20% in 2014). Hope they really do it this year, but so far, doesn't seem likely to me.

The presidency will be won and lost on turnout. It is a waste of energy to spend time listing reasons why a candidate is a bad fit for a particular demographic. All the candidates have baggage. Any democratic candidate can win with a unified effort. We have a corrupt, racist, narcissistic, mentally ill president. If we can't take any candidate on the democratic side and win, it might be that the country has already turned, much like 1933 Germany.

Vermont is all in for Bernie (except me)... but even in Vermont we haven't been able to implement the things Bernie is advocating... him as a nominee more than worries me

It's a pretty simple choice, really. One can either choose the side that is most likely to make progress in the country (regardless of the nominee) or the side that is fundamentally opposed to progress.

How much inspiration should it take to make that choice? This seemingly dire need to be inspired that some profess as a requirement to get them to vote has never made much sense to me, especially when the alternative is Trump and all that entails.

I'll start by saying that I will vote blue no matter who, though I currently lean towards Warren. Also, I was a Bernie supporter in 2016, but voted for Hillary in the general because...well, I'm a grown up...and my main concern was the judiciary (with good cause, as it turns out).

But since then, I definitely have my questions about his ability to lead and work with others. I know the Republicans don't require that of 45 because they're all fine with a dictator as long as he's their dictator. Dems aren't going to be as willing to work in lockstep. And if we don't flip the Senate we can forget getting anything done. Of course, standing still is better than going back to the stone age with the orange shitgibbon, but we are running out of time on a lot of fronts and will need to make some progress.

Whenever I bring any of this up, I am relentlessly and viciously attacked by his cultists. No, not ALL supporters, but the ones who are as blindly loyal as MAGAs. It's really disheartening. Especially when you ask someone "but will you vote for the nominee if it's not Bernie?" and they respond with some version of "if Bernie is not the nominee then the vote is rigged and America deserves 45." I've heard that A. LOT. Which scares the shit out of me. And it also makes me really angry that they're willing to put vulnerable people and the planet in greater peril if they don't get their way.

Anyway, what worries me is that, if Bernie DOES get the nomination, anyone not as politically engaged as the average DUer who asks even the most innocuous question about him will get attacked by his cultists and they won't bother voting. I mean, I've voted in every election since I turned 18, including local elections. And if I find myself turned off of the idea of voting for him, what's going to happen to the person who typically doesn't bother to vote? We need to get those people on board. Hoping that they hate Trump enough to vote regardless of being attacked and threatened seems like a very bad plan to me.

we know for a fact that both were heavily involved in posing as Sanders supporters to split the party.
I don't think they would have as much influence in the general election, but I don't doubt that they will use similar tactics to try and turn off moderate voters.

in my family and circle of friends and they really act as awful IRL as they do online. It makes me sad because the rest of the time they're fine people; but ask a question, dare to find the tiniest fault in Bernie, suggest you prefer a different candidate, or disagree with him in any way and they lose their minds. I thankfully don't know any MAGAs IRL, but some of my Bernie fanatic friends and family are the reason we can't talk politics during any social gathering. I have to hide a few of them on social media during election years too.

When I was very young, I worked my tail off for McGovern, to say it didn't go well is an understatement. It was a bloodbath. I remember my Dad trying to tell me that if McGovern was the candidate we would get creamed but I didn't believe him. He was more than right and reminded me of that FOREVER! The down ballot bleeding was horrible!

I mean it people, Sanders is McGovern on steroids. The GOP will blast him as a communist, (the masses don't know the difference). They will talk about all the "free stuff" he wants to give out. To the masses that is giving free stuff to "deadbeats" ie black and brown people in their ugly world.

I will vote for BS if he is the nominee, and I will brush off my passport in hopes of getting out of Dodge before all hell breaks loose.

But I don't see him ever getting anywhere close to a majority of delegates in the primary. He's currently in second after two of his stronghold states have voted and nowhere near a majority.

Sanders is the only clear non-starter. It’s impossible not to regard the Vermont senator in a Trumplike mold—he seldom has shown an ability to build consensus and threatens to use executive orders extensively, just like Trump. It’s also doubtful he could assemble a highly qualified Cabinet, meaning he’d essentially be the left wing version of Trump: isolated, angry, unable to work with others and showing too little respect for dissenting opinions. A Sanders candidacy simply guarantees a Trump second term.

TX CD 22 is an open seat with Pete Olson retiring. The DCCC has targeted this seat for flipping. There are 15 candidates in GOP primary including the grandson of GHW Bush. Another candidate, Kathleen Wall, is running in the GOP primary and she spent $6 million in 2018 running in GOP primary for TX CD 2 and did not make GOP primary runoff. I have had Wall block walkers come to my house twice (I live in a very GOP neighborhood) and I have found Wall doorhanger on my door twice now.

Pierce Bush is running against socialism

Sri Preston Kulkarni is the leading Democrat for this seat (Sri has a GOP type and another person running against him in the Texas Democratic Primary) I texted this ad to Sri and he knew about it already. Sri Preston Kulkarni is a great guy and we need to flip this seat

If sanders is the nominee, we can forget about this seat and we will have Kevin McCarthy as speaker
