Is It Bernie's Party Now?

Politico

The ultimate outsider took over a splintered party from within. Sound familiar?

By MICHAEL KRUSE

02/10/2020 05:25 AM EST

MILFORD, N.H. — They were waiting for Bernie Sanders, this crowd of better than a thousand people, spanning three indoor tennis courts at an athletic club, wearing their Bernie hats, their Bernie shirts, their Bernie socks.

“He’s what a politician is supposed to be,” Donald McCullough, 55, a long-haired restaurant staffer and graphic designer, told me over the sounds of an all-woman rock band called Bad Larrys—this evening’s opening act of Sanders’ increasingly concertlike rallies. “Politicians are supposed to be working for us.”

“A candidate who will fight for the working class,” said Mike Bizier, 27. “A candidate who has been consistent for 50 years.”

“I never really paid attention to politics,” said Cara Ciminello, 24, with her fiancé, Peter Sughrue, 25, “and then we heard Bernie, and we were, like, ‘He’s actually giving us a voice. He’s actually saying what we want to hear,’ so then we got behind him—and now we won’t stop till he’s in the White House.”

For instance:

If you recognize the most basic obvious fact that the DNC is a rotten corrupt private organization that needs to experience a hostile takeover to be completely reformed, vote Bernie Sanders. He is the only one willing to bring Democracy back to the Democratic Party. #DNCRigged

But I see a lot more tweets from Dems saying they'll resist such a hostile takeover.

And if anyone objects to some people characterizing a possible takeover of the party by Sanders as a hostile takeover, keep in mind that some of his supporters love seeing it that way.

And keep in mind, too, all the horrible things Sanders has said about the Democratic Party over the years.

The 18 to 29 year old voters are four years older this time. Those young adults were more likely to identify as liberals but were less likely to identify as Democrats. They are up for grabs so someone's got to get them.

Bernie is opposed by many who have been active in the Democratic Party for a long long time. It is nowhere near his party now, and it may never become his party, even if he wins the nomination. But, if Bernie does win the Democratic nomination, there is a possible path forward for the party "to become his". That's a bridge he may be able to cross but only if he gets to it. If he wins both the nomination AND the presidency it becomes a possibility

If you want an ideologically fairly pure social democratic party, then move to a nation that has proportional representation, like where I live, Sweden.

Pro tip, if you do walk into a social democratic party and tell them you are a democratic socialist, odds are fairly high they direct you to an actual socialist party, such as Vänsterpartiet. You will then go there and finally realise that what people like me have been saying all along is correct: Bernie and many of his supporters are not democratic socialists in reality. The are just bog standard social democrats who are using a thoroughly false self-labelling as democratic socialists to play avant-garde lefty.

The only other way you will have a pure enough left party here is to start a 3rd party in the US, which will end in tears and do nothing but guarantee the fucking Rethugs will win the VAST majority of all elections at a federal level. There is zero chance you will drag the US Democratic party far enough to the left to satisfy a Bernie type. It will not happen for decades, if ever.

The first past the post, single member district, majoritarian American system simple will not allow it to happen without the utter destruction of the current 2-party alignment, which by that very same systemic upheaval means the RW will run riot for decades as they will draw in far greater numbers of people fleeing the far left than the far left will gain themselves. This would be the case until at least most all the Boomers have died off, and probably most of the first half or so of the Gen Xers, as those cohorts are not only far more conservative than the Gens that follow, but will grow a bit more conservative as an overall percentage with age, and will continue to vote at a higher percentage as well.
