Jeff Weaver on Bernie's Senior Policy Analyst: "He really doesn't know much, to be honest with you."

Can we agree that one of the key issues to attack Trump is his corruption and nepotism? This is most visible in his regular use of his family members to perform jobs that they have no qualifications or experience to do such as Jared Kushner and Ivanka being deployed as US representatives.

The question is Bernie the best candidate to attack Trump on this point? Afterall, Bernie paid his son-in-law a $100,000 salary to run his foundation even though David Driscoll has no non-profit experience. Likewise, what about Bernie's son Levi who has long been on his campaign staff payroll as a Senior Policy Analyst. Yet, Jeff Weaver has described Levi's contributions saying: “[He] really doesn’t know much, to be honest with you."

Can Bernie credibly attack Trump's nepotism given his own history? I think the best response Bernie's campaign might come up with would be to topic about cherry picked poll numbers or maybe spam "LOLOLOLOL," because it really is not defensible.

While some may wonder if his father’s political distance contributed to his loss, New Hampshire politicos argued that defeat was inevitable: Levi, after all, lived about an hour outside of the district, and has a history of losing local elections, once finishing in seventh place in his bid for the Claremont city council. As The Boston Globe reported in February, nearly all of Bernie’s campaign aides, advisers, and allies in New Hampshire warned Levi—whose title on his father’s campaign was senior policy analyst—not to run, and not to expect their endorsements if he did. Jeff Weaver, Bernie’s presidential campaign manager, could barely disguise his disdain: “[He] really doesn’t know much, to be honest with you.”

Levi, for his part, has tried his best to separate his own accomplishments from those of his father, repeatedly joking that he wasn’t Bernie’s son, but the “the son of Larry David’s fourth cousin.” (Please clap.) But his sheer lack of political acumen soon became apparent after he announced his candidacy in February, too late in the cycle to win endorsements from like-minded progressives, and his campaign subsequently hauled in less than $35,000 in fund-raising. (“I made a conscience [sic] decision that I’m not going to take money from corporations, from lobbyists,” he told the Daily Beast, which pointed out that his father raised prodigious millions through small donations.) Even worse, the younger Sanders failed to register among New Hampshire voters, who told the Beast that they would have preferred a candidate who actually lived in the district. A questionable performance in last month’s Democratic primary debate, per The New York Times, did little to improve his chances. He tended toward shouting, and interrupted other candidates so frequently that the moderator threatened to cut off his microphone.

7. Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife indicted in use of campaign funds for personal expenses

When Republicans use campaign funds to personally benefit themselves or their family members, progressives have rightly condemned such actions as evidence of corruption. Yet, Bernie's own campaign chairperson has dismissed Levi's role in Bernie's campaign as a "Senior Policy Adviser," and there is no effort to justify keeping Levi on staff. This is not an isolated incident. Bernie has also hired David Driscoll, the husband of his daughter in law, as the President of his non-profit foundation even though he had no non-profit experience.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/21/politics/duncan-hunter-campaign-charges/index.html

Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, routinely -- and illegally -- used campaign funds to pay personal bills big and small, from luxury vacations to kids' school lunches and delinquent family dentistry bills, according to a stinging 47-page indictment unsealed Tuesday.

The charges of wire fraud, falsifying records, campaign finance violations and conspiracy were the culmination of a Department of Justice investigation that has stretched for more than a year, during which the Republican congressman from California has maintained his innocence.

The detailed indictment portrays the Hunters as living well beyond their means and said they "knowingly conspired with each other" to convert campaign funds to personal use.

Federal prosecutors contend that the Hunters repeatedly misrepresented what their expenses were for -- in one instance buying personal clothing at a golf course so that the purchase "could be falsely reported to the treasurer as 'balls for the wounded warriors,'" the indictment says.

I understand we all want to change the topic and brag about poll numbers. But, since Trump's nepotism is one of the most clear examples of his corruption? How will Bernie respond?

Are we just going to have Bernie and Trump trolls trading tweets of LOLOLOL and cherry picked polls? Or, are the American people going to be able to get a real discussion of why conflicts of interest are bad and how they hurt government?
