to entice super-delegates to put him over the top, thereby being granted the nomination.

(52,169 posts)since they don't have a vote on it. Subsequent ballots all delegates are in play.

(92,433 posts)to cinch the nomination, if the super delegates dont vote for the candidate with the most delegates, it will get very ugly

(26,773 posts)Things don't look likely to clear up in the next week and a half... and too many delegates are likely to be split too many ways on Super Tuesday.
I'm not sure that anyone will be close enough for the superdelegates to put him/her over the top.
Even uglier if (like IA/NH) we have one candidate with the most votes and another with the most delegates... and neither close to a majority of either measure.

(16,616 posts)struck me as having great merit and is in harmony with Bloomberg's attitude all along. If Biden can gain strength and establish himself, Bloomberg would then throw his support behind Biden. I really think Bloomberg was counting on Biden and that the only reason he's become a "thing" this week is because people are worrying about Biden.
Bloomberg wants to stay involved in the attack, but I think he can take or leave the presidency. I thought that was his plan all along, but unexpected developments happened. Shit got real and he stepped up his spending.

(2,701 posts)back. He would never throw his support behind anyone if it means denying him the highest office. He changed the rules through money, power and influence to attain the unthinkable - 3 terms as Mayor - when he left office he changed the rules back. It is all about him. He loves power.
If I was supposed to believe the initial argument that he just wanted to help get rid of Trump because he cares so much for the country, he convinced me otherwise.
It was made clear as day, to me, when his Obama ad started airing. This was a direct slap in the face to Biden. He wanted to give the impression that he was Obamas right hand man. This revealed that he wanted to take Bidens place. And this was when Biden was at the top of every national poll and was predicted to have the most delegates by the pollsters. And Im not buying the talking point that Bloomberg entered because Biden was weak. All of the pollsters, at the time of his entrance, showed otherwise.
So, Im now supposed to believe that he will happily give up his chance of being President by throwing his support behind Biden if he ends up being behind Biden at the end of the voting? Please.

(1,327 posts)If whoever has the most delegates going into the first round is not the eventual nominee, it is going to get VERY ugly. Yes, there are superdelegates, but the process should respect the will of the voters.
How do you think the, say, 35% of voters who supported the first place candidate will react if the super delegates steal the election from the rightful first place winner and give it to the second or third place person in terms of delegate count? Because I suspect we'll have an awful lot of that person's supporters sitting out in November in furious protest and any "gains" the DNC might have hoped that would get us at the ballot box will be for naught.

(26,773 posts)"Whoever gets the most votes/delegates" could have been selected as a way of choosing a nominee... but it wasn't. The winner needs an absolute majority.
If the eventual nominee gets a majority of delegates... the nomination won't be "stolen" - though some supporters of other candidates may not be willing to accept the will of the majority.
If only DU rules could control the convention.

(1,327 posts)But I guarantee you that is not how it will be seen by the majority of people who voted for that person. If the person who got the most delegates is not the ultimate nominee, it will essentially be stealing an election.
Would you think it was fair if Biden got 45% of the vote, the delegates decided they wanted to give it to Bernie (say he got 30%), and so they all voted to crown Bernie nominee in the second round? Pretty sure those 45% of people who voted for Biden would never come around and support Bernie. And that's exactly the situation we're looking at if people try to manipulate and give someone the nomination who didn't rightfully win. We will lose in November and it will be a terrible blow to party unity.
I'm not even a Bernie supporter, and I would not support the nominee in November if this sort of cheating went down. I just couldn't support that sort of corruption and disrespect towards the voting process. If the DNC isn't going to respect my vote, maybe they don't deserve it.

(26,773 posts)It's absolutely possible that we'll get to the convention with the same problem.
Which one would be "stealing" in that scenario?

(17,608 posts)Sure we don't officially use RCV at the DNC but the proposed scenario is not unlike RCV.
Real RCV would very likely not result in Sanders as the winner, if it were held today.
