Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIt's depressing me that Bloomberg's approach (see today's NYT editorial) is working..
... on me. I compare the full flowing adrenaline (?endorphin??? dopamine) sustained excitement I've felt about Warren and Buttigieg and Klobuchar. And I compare it with the spike of excitement I get when Bloomberg pokes at Trump and gets results. And my growing belief that it's the latter that will work with more Americans, either to tip them over the undecided edge in the right direction or to get them out to the polls. I don't want this kind of world. What can we do about it?????

(24,397 posts)if thats what happens. Lets hope his anti-tRump approach has coattails and we take back the Senate and retain the House.
My personal hope: Day One, the new D president issues executive orders overturning 100% of tRumps EOs.

(8,379 posts)Those were the two things that I felt were lacking in the last Democratic administration, although Obama is still my favorite president ever.
Can you imagine how much more respected the U.S. will be when we are back in the Paris Accord??

(7,434 posts)The gist of the piece is that Bloomberg buys his way into anything he wants. One of his techniques is to flood his opposition with MONEY to convince them to go soft on criticism. He's given huge sums of money to his political opposition forces. This has effectively shut them up. IOW, he bribes his opposition.
So if Bloomberg buys ads that are effective against Trump, it may help to remove Trump from office. But Bloomberg's candidacy should be a flop, if the Dems stay on top of their game.

(5,335 posts)At this point that is the only thing I care about. We can talk about the other things near and dear to our hearts after trump gets defeated. Until then, nothing we want to accomplish is remotely possible.

You get an adrenaline rush from it. That's why Trump has been successful - he made his supporters fearful and angry by telling them how horribly victimized they were (even though most of them are wallowing in white privilege), and in all his rallies he stokes their anger. Anger feels good when you think you're a victim, so Trump makes them feel good. That's pure demagoguery. (And, unfortunately, that seems to be how some of Sanders' spokespeople operate, too.). So we have to be careful about falling into the same trap; although Trump gives us plenty of legitimate reasons for anger we have to be sure we're being as rational as we can about how we react. I do think Bloomberg's ads are effective because of the way he skewers Trump, but he seems to be carefully avoiding raw Trumpian incitement. He just shows us the bad shit Trump does and tells us he's the guy to repair the damage. The ads are very well done.

If I wanted to vote for a Republican I would change parties. I would vote for any other candidate, but not him. Warren is my chosen candidate. To me, the powers that be don't want a progressive. They say it has to do with electibility but I believe it's about money, power and control.
The problem with our system of elections is that it is based on money and disenfranchisement. More people vote Democratic and support progressive policies yet we run afraid of losing. I'd rather lose than betray my principles. I'm not afraid of running a candidate that will bring much needed change. If we only run supposed Centrist, we will slowly move more and more right.

(595 posts)My dad was UAW, I also am union. Blue collar folks who voted for Trump used to vote for us as we fought for the working man. We have been complicit in the demise of Unions.
I read a lot on DU about supposed union members who don't want universal health. I do! The money saved can go in my wage. People won't go bankrupt paying for care or for the product itself. Minimum wage is still $7.25 and there are Democrats against raising it.
If we fight for all we will win support. Hillary won! She only lost because turnout in 3 states was not good for us, along with election interference. If we get Dems excited we will win. Except for supposedly being able to beat Trump, what is exciting about Bloomberg?

(421 posts)Though I like how Amy is trying to gain support from disaffected people who previously voted for the Orange Blighter in 2016 through reasoned logic, I LOVE the way Bloomberg is taking it to drumpf with body blows - that kind of ass kicking is WHAT I WANT.

(14,335 posts)The other candidates have to elbow each other to come out on top. Bloomberg can just spend more.
He is also asking his wealthy friends not to donate to any other Democratic candidates, which I find appalling:

(5,240 posts)He wants to do all the right things for Democratic priorities. However, his lack of federal govt. experience is distressing. Another all talk, no real idea how to work with Congress. It's not the NYC city council and not being the boss of a company you own. I read his plans and think of the old 30s election slogan, "a chicken in every pot'! (Herbert Hoover)

(9,502 posts)American voters are, for many reasons that will easily exceed the word limit of a DU post, what they are. Their votes count, and no miracles or revolutions will change that.
There are many lofty goals that require decades, if not generations, to implement in a democratic society. My own wet dream is compulsory education in formal logic and civics for every voter. Without being well informed, to paraphrase Jefferson, the people cannot be trusted with their own government, as we have recently learned with the cult of Trump. Unfortunately, I see the country, prompted by social media, getting less informed and more opinionated. And I don't want this kind of world either. But I am resigned to be exceedingly patient if I ever to see any changes in the direction I consider crucial for a healthy democratic society.
Bloomberg is not the worst that can happen. And then, keep an eye on events as they unfold.

(5,275 posts)He is a real Billionaire and that fact gets under Fat Donnies red skin.
He also joins Bernie and Biden as candidates nearing 80. I think that is a real concern.
But we must support Bernie, Joe, Bloomberg, Mayor Pete....Really whoever gets the nomination.
We must stop this budding Fascist movement ASAP or were in for a long dark night.

(13,783 posts)...Bloomberg's does. And certainly Warren's never did. I do take some solace in what seems to be a fact (don't know if it is a fact), and that is that people in very high positions don't seem to fall fatally ill while in those positions.

(25,183 posts)is for the moderates to congeal around one candidate. If Pete or Amy for instance became the apparent best choice, the Bernie crowd and the Bloomberg bunch would probably only get 25-30% of the delegates each, leaving 40-50% for the moderate choice, then the superdelegates put that person over the top on the second ballot.
That's how Trump won the GOP nomination, there was no clear acceptable choice for never-Trumpers until it was too late.
