Which of our candidates has tried to unify us, and how are they doing this?

...I am asking for opinions on the question of unifying us. We must be unified in order to win. I am not sure of the answer, and asking for ideas about this. Thank You for any responses.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

But in my opinion Warren and Buttigieg have been the least divisive.

He talks about how divided the country is now, and why we are. We need to lead by example, to show everyone that they have a place here in our country.

He talks about changing immigration policies, and policies towards minorities.

Unifying the country underlies his whole approach.

That's all I have, off the top of my head. I'll see if I can find more specific ways he wants to unify us.

because he cleverly formulated his campaign as a campaign about reclaiming the soul of America, meaning if you wanted that back, you felt a strong wish to rally around him. Every person I know wants that, so it was an invitation that was hard to refuse.

"Unite behind Joe Biden and take back what we've lost under Trump." It was also about recapturing our lost self respect.

People can argue about whether he came off that track, but if he could get back on it, it would be beneficial. He initially barely attacked any other candidates. It was a completely positive campaign about believing in and reclaiming the idea of America.

Other candidates have the capacity to unite us, but Biden's campaign seemed designed primarily to accomplish this IMO.

I think my preferred candidate could do this too, but she has to play the long game. She's having to fight a number of peripheral battles at the same time.

unify across the political spectrum. His speech in the wake of El Paso sounded a message he has delivered from day one.

In every appearance, Biden has made certain fundamental ideas clear, calling us to our better angels. His campaign theme transcends ideology and policy, two places other candidates hitch themselves to, where I believe they end up so tethered theres’s not enough room to move on out from, to bring folks together in our most important mission—protecting our democratic values and ideals. Expressing these, Joe emphasized America as an idea, the idea of inclusivity.

I am sorry to see so much time given over to policy wars. That’s just me. More important is that whomever YOU choose, unlike Trump, does subscribe in word and deed to our most cherished idea.

Joe Biden reminded all of us of what a presidential president would sound like
WaPo by Jonathan Capehart

(Capehart); In a fiery and blunt speech slamming the tenor, tone and words of President Trump as the nation reels from white nationalist domestic terrorism, former vice president Joe Biden reminded all of us of what a presidential president sounds like. His words were stirring. His delivery was passionate. And they were befitting a man who kicked off his campaign with a video decrying Trump’s shameful response to Charlottesville.

Snip———————————

The most powerful idea in the history of the world I think beats in the hearts of the people of this country. And it beats in all of us. No matter your race, your ethnicity. No matter your gender identity, your sexual orientation. No matter your faith. It beats in the heart of rich and poor alike. It unites America -- whether your ancestors were Native to these shores or they were Kbrought here forcibly and enslaved, whether they were immigrants generations back, like my family from Ireland, or those coming today looking to build a better life for your family.

The American creed – that we are all created equal –was written long-ago. But the genius of every generation of Americans has opened it wider and wider and wider, to include those who have been excluded in a previous generation. That’s why it has never gathered dust in the history books.

(Capehart) Biden wasn’t blind to the shortcomings of our nation and the men who formed it. He talked about them. But he demonstrated that the vision of America was perpetuated by Democratic and Republican presidents alike throughout its history. Ending his speech, Biden slipped off his prepared remarks in an emphatic way. “This is the United States of America! Period! May God protect our troops,” Biden said pounding the podium, ending a speech that everyone knows he believes in his bones.

More than ever as we weigh candidates against each other, we need to consider whether all subscribe to the bottom line, the “idea” Biden talked about. That, not policy, should be the litmus test for a starter.
