Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumMike Bloomberg ran once for Mayor of NYC as a Republican.
Elizabeth Warren was a Republican for some time.
Bernie Sanders is only a Democrat when he must be to run for President.
Joe Biden has always been a Democrat.
If you want a genuine, life-long Democrat as President, Joe Biden's your man.
If you think I'm joking, you're incorrect.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(13,871 posts)I was a Goldwater Republican when I was 12 years old.
Does this disqualify Hillary and me as "true Democrats?"
By the way, George Wallace was a life-long Democrat. Strom Thurmond began his career as Democrat. Your post really fails to make any salient point.

(1,584 posts)Bloomberg is still the only candidate in our primary who ran and was elected as a Republican. Big difference there.

(146,317 posts)I don't think so. As a Senator, he takes great pride at not being a Democratic Senator. In fact, he insists on that.
Your point is not made.

(1,584 posts)Trying to equivocate Bernie Sanders getting the Democratic nomination and switching to independent with Bloomberg running and serving as a Republican is wrong.
Trying to further equate people who once registered as Republicans prior to having any interest in running for office is way off base.
You would serve your candidate better by stating what he is for vs tearing others down with false equivalency. Bothsiderism run amok.

(146,317 posts)All three names I mentioned are eligible for the Democratic nomination. As primary voters, we will choose the one who wins.
My point is that calling one of our candidates a "Repubican" is a lie. At this time, all of them are Democrats by their own declaration.
You have missed my point. However, of the leading candidates, only Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, and Amy Klobuchar have been Democrats all along. The others have changed their party a time or two, or five, or whatever.
All are still Democratic candidates for the nomination.

(146,317 posts)for President until 1968. However, I campaigned for JFK as a 15 year old in 1960. I cannot remember not being a Democrat, because I was never anything else.
None of that matters, however, really. All of our current Candidates are Democrats during this race. They have claimed to be, so they are, according to the rules of the Democratic Party.
Whatever they might have been at another time, they have all become Democrats if they were not before. What does that mean? Not a great deal, I think.

(11,989 posts)And governed as a moderate Republican (when there were such things).
And endorsed and supported other Republicans.
And it was not long ago.
I don't find that, in and of itself "disqualifying." On the other hand, I do not equate that track record with that of Sanders or Warren, either, who in their professional, political lives, AFAIK, never endorsed Republicans, and never took a position inconsistent with acceptable Democratic party positions and never took the side of big business/banks/developers/etc. over the little guy.
