Bloomberg Will Dismiss Rivals at Debate

WASHINGTON, Feb 18 (Reuters) - When Michael Bloomberg steps onto the Democratic debate stage for the first time on Wednesday, he will be ready to dismiss rivals like Joe Biden, who as vice president made “speeches that somebody writes for him,” and Pete Buttigieg, “mayor of a town.”

Bloomberg told Reuters in an interview earlier this month he would contrast their experience to his success as billionaire chief executive of global financial information and media company Bloomberg LP and three-time mayor of New York City.

“None of them would know how to run a big organization,” he said of the seven other Democratic candidates seeking the nomination to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in November.

Some of his rivals have made clear they see the televised debate as their best opportunity to subject Bloomberg, who has been rising fast in the polls, to greater public scrutiny.

He will face tough questions over his past support for policies that have been widely criticized as racially discriminatory.

He will also have to defend himself against the charge he is trying to buy the election with his self-financed campaign. Public filings show he spent $188 million of his own money through December.

It's not me that's feeling desperate. The 'myth of the moderate middle' and its various assumptions about "swing voters" and "independents" (none of which is supported by actual data) has people willing to overlook racism, misogyny and bribery. But when you lessen the contrast between Trump and his opponent, the disenchanted and jaded will become more so.

Various pundits and voters (with their anecdotal 'evidence') are still subscribing to outdated "conventional wisdom," like the people who think the electorate today is no different than it was in 1972. Swing voters and independents are not who people think they are. They don't constitute this mass of ideologically-similar, astute moderates patiently waiting to see which party will put up the most centrist candidate. That's the crux of the narrative many subscribe to, but - again - it's not supported by data (in fact, quite the opposite). Just as there's no evidence of mischievous crossover voting or voter fraud ever having an impact.

The upshot of all this is that if you’re a campaign trying to appeal to independents, moderates or undecided voters — or a concerned citizen trying to make sense of these groups in the context of an election — policy and ideology aren’t good frames of reference. There just isn’t much in terms of policy or ideology that unites these groups.11

Anybody who claims to have the winning formula for winning moderate, independent or undecided voters is making things up. Perhaps more centrist policies will appeal to some voters in each of these categories — but so will more extreme policies.12

And come election day, these potential swing voters may not ultimately care all that much about policy. They don’t tend to identify themselves based on ideology, and they don’t follow politics all that closely.

First, this is a really small group — only 2.4 percent of the electorate falls in all three buckets. And even this super small middle of the middle is … you guessed it … all over the ideological map. Rare as these voters are, anybody who talks about winning over undecided, independent, moderate voters should first address the question: which undecided, independent, moderate voters?

I really don't know much about him or what he did as NY mayor; I am getting mixed reviews. I agree that the business model is not an especially good one for running a country, and I get pretty annoyed with people who think managing a business and managing a government are the same. There will be some overlapping skills, obviously, but a good business manager will not necessarily be a good president. Bloomberg, though, might at least be competent at day-to-day operations; Trump can't even do that. I hope we can do better than either Bloomberg or Sanders.

The Democrats have always been about working class. That’s why the support of the unions and minimum wage raises are there. What does it say about society when both parties are headed by billionaires? What does it say about our party? America is not a company to run. It is an idea to achieve. Right now, so many people out there work hard to have nothing. A 100k a year household is a few lost paychecks from ruin. A billionaire will not help this economic disparity. But a Democrat will.

I have watched six of the eight debates that we have had so far. I have have experienced unprecedented "warm fuzzies" after watching each of them because our bench is so deep this year and because liberal policy is now, more or less, mainstream in the Democratic Party. I am proud of my party for the first time in a long time.

But I have this sneaking suspicion that Bloomberg is going to waste our (other) candidates on stage. The OP explains how. I think his attacks will be effective, for better or for worse.
