Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThe fact that Steyer is polling 20% in South Carolina should scare people
It scares me for the future of our democracy that, in the age when the billionaires are taking a greater and greater share of our economy, they can apparently get 20% support in a Democratic primary just by spending enough money.
I'm not sure why I even bother to follow politics if this is the future. The movie "Idiocracy" is becoming more and more prophecy- maybe I should buy stock in Brawndo (you need to see the movie to get that joke).

(25,183 posts)For the last three months, you could not watch a half-hour of commercial TV without seeing a Steyer ad. Buttigieg started running his TV ads about two weeks ago, and I even saw my first Klobuchar ad yesterday. Warren has a modest amount of advertising here, and Gabbard has run an occasional ad here for the last few months. I have yet to see a Biden TV ad. And of course, for the last month there have been Bloomberg ads, but I'm sure they're the ones that are nationally televised.
What Steyer has been doing in SC is what Bloomie is doing all over the country. People with weak minds respond to advertising, there's a whole industry out there looking for ever more sophisticated ways to influence tastes and preferences.

(26,770 posts)A solid win in SC is his single best shot at regaining momentum in time for Super Tuesday. 20% going to Steyer would almost certainly sink that (possibly even giving Bernie a shot at winning the state).
Hopefully Steyer does poorly enough in NV that he drops out rather than wait for SC. Since Bloomberg won't be on the ballot, Biden should regain the bulk of those votes.

(25,111 posts)I'm concerned about, Steyer in SC is pushing them further out. Also Bloomberg is rising fast, and Senator Sanders need to worry about that.
Money does buy.
