Stacey Abrams' voting rights group attacked for accepting Bloomberg contribution

ake Stacey Abrams, for instance. The former Democratic candidate for governor is getting clobbered by supporters of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders for her Monday comments on ABC’s “The View” that defended Bloomberg for pumping hundreds of millions of dollars of his own fortune into the campaign. From ABC News:

brams defended Bloomberg's colossal campaign spending, saying, "I think that for once we actually know where the money is coming from."

"Every person is allowed to run and should run the race that they think they should run, and Mike Bloomberg has chosen to use his finances. Other people are using their dog, their charisma, their whatever," she added. "I think it's an appropriate question to raise. But I don't think it's disqualifying for anyone to invest in fixing America."

It’s a complex topic for Abrams, who has made it known she’s willing to serve as a vice president to whichever Democrat emerges as the nominee.

Bloomberg donated $5 million to Abrams’ Fair Fight voting rights group -- the largest single donation received by the organization. Bloomberg was later given a primo speaking slot at a voting summit she held in Atlanta. More “The View” appearance:

I am grateful to any person who contributes to Fair Fight. We have more than 100,000 contributers. His check just had a few more zeroes it – and we appreciate that, because as I said, I’m not endorsing anyone….”

28. It's how Bloomberg buys off potential critics
Wed Feb 19, 2020, 08:20 PM
Feb 2020

It's a long-standing tactic of his. In this case it was because of his policy in which NYC was charging low-income workers rent to stay in rundown shelters.
"reliable allies in the nonprofit world declined to take a public stand against Mayor Bloomberg, for fear of alienating their most important donor: Mayor Bloomberg."
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mike-bloomberg-philanthropy-silence_n_5e4c23fbc5b65f25da502fa5

It worked. Groups that opposed the policy kept quiet because of Bloomberg's largesse. It's a dangerous road to go down. Oh yes, but he's "on our side now". Now that he's running as a Democrat. Forget all those years of mouthing repub talking points, funding repub candidates, criticizing Obama. It's all ok because he gave money to this group or that group. It's a strategy and it is for only one end: more power for Bloomberg. People are so easily fooled.

Oh yes, and we have the Bernie bros as the evil-doers here. Rather than a guy with autocratic tendencies whose campaign is already trying to get rivals to drop out.
