Yang: Bloomberg is telling donors not to give to Democrats in the Primary

Former Democratic primary competitor Andrew Yang, now a CNN contributor, told a post-debate panel that self-funding billionaire candidate Mike Bloomberg is calling major party donors and asking them sit out the 2020 primary, in order to starve his rivals of much-needed campaign cash.

Yang made his startling claim in the aftermath of the Nevada debate, attributing the claim to one of his own previous donors who he said heard Bloomberg’s plea first-hand.

“People don’t have any money. You’re shaking your head. You know the story,” CNN’s Gloria Borger pointed out, addressing Yang. “And who has the money to compete other than Bernie Sanders right now and Michael Bloomberg?”

“That’s the great question: Is, could Elizabeth [Warren] or Joe [Biden] or Amy [Klobuchar] or Pete [Buttigieg] have a break-out night that leads to tens of millions of dollars of donations,” Yang noted. He then dropped a bombshell, explaining that major Democratic donors are, “frankly, getting phone calls from Mike Bloomberg right now saying ‘Sit this one out, I got this.'”

“If you’re a donor, not donating is a pretty appealing pitch,” Yang added, laughing.

“Sorry, but could you say that again?” CNN reporter Dana Bash pressed. “Mike Bloomberg is calling donors saying ‘Don’t give to my opponents?'”

“Mike Bloomberg is calling donors, saying: ‘Hey, just sit this out, I got this, I’ll bankroll the whole thing. Just don’t donate to anybody.”

“You heard this or know this?” Chris Cuomo said, jumping in.
“I heard it from a major donor,” Yang replied.
“Your donor?” Bash asked.
“Yes,” Yang confirmed. “A donor said that. And it’s a person who donates to a number of candidates, ordinarily, says these are the phone calls that Mike’s been making.”

…therefore I pointed out to you that Sanders regularly attacks Biden and Buttigieg for their """billionaire donors""" in an effort to try to shame both them and their donors and thus dry up those contributions, even though said """billionaire donors""" can only donate the maximum $2,800 to their campaigns, which I'm sure Sanders has received from many donors as well, although in much purer 280 increments of $10, I'm sure!

Thu Feb 20, 2020, 03:16 PM
Feb 2020

but they CAN and DO give huge amounts to Super PACS.

So, isn't it kind of disingenuous to suggest that billionaires only give 2800 bucks each?

If all that was on the line was that 2800, they wouldn't be having closed door fundraisers for the really rich folk.

48. No, it's not.
Thu Feb 20, 2020, 03:22 PM
Feb 2020

Because Super PACs do not donate to candidates and therefore any money a billionaire gives to a Super PAC will never end up in the coffers of a candidate to begin with.

And the whole """wine cave""" scandal of a few debates ago, yes, actually the people that went there were able to get in just by donating that much. A regular person posted their experience about it:

But the whole experience fell well short of proving Warren’s suggestion that “billionaires in wine caves" will “pick the next president.” Nor is it an example of “corruption” — a word some Democratic candidates use far too casually to describe political and policy opponents in either their or the other party. Let’s save that term for folks who plainly belong in a jail cell and those who’ve taken up residence in one already.

Speaking of price, my bet is that you probably want to know: How much did it cost for me to go?

To attend the dinner, donors were asked to “max out” — to contribute the maximum allowed by law to a primary candidate. I made my first contribution to Mayor Pete back in May at a San Francisco fundraiser that was attended by close to 1,000 people. I’ve made additional contributions since, including buying a bumper sticker from his campaign shop. (It’s not every day in America that a gay man has a realistic chance of becoming president, so yes, my partner and I probably qualify as enthusiastic.) All of these contributions count toward the individual limit of $2,800.

So, exactly how much more did it cost to attend that infamous wine cave dinner? In my case, the answer is $11.

Taken from: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/12/21/about-that-wine-cave-dinner-i-was-there/

This is why their attacks on their donors are so shameful. You can rest assured that both Sanders and Warren have plenty of donors that maxed out at the same $2,800 donation amounts that they are criticizing Biden and Buttigieg for getting from billionaires.
If I were to vote in a presidential

but it goes to a fund (Super PAC) dedicated to getting that candidate elected, a fund that can have unlimited donations AND has virtually no rules or oversight in terms of what they say and do.

So, that 2800 bucks from a billionaire is often followed by millions in unregulated campaign advertising.

Thu Feb 20, 2020, 03:44 PM
Feb 2020

Yang did not specify how his donor knew about Bloomberg's calls:

“You heard this or know this?” Chris Cuomo said, jumping in.
“I heard it from a major donor,” Yang replied.
“Your donor?” Bash asked.
“Yes,” Yang confirmed. “A donor said that. And it’s a person who donates to a number of candidates, ordinarily, says these are the phone calls that Mike’s been making.”

https://www.mediaite.com/election-2020/newly-minted-cnn-contributor-andrew-yang-claims-bloomberg-is-actively-asking-major-dem-donors-to-sit-out-primary/

Maybe the donor heard from other donors, maybe the donor was called themselves and discussed it with other donors who were also called. We simply do not know from this article. We do know that Yang thought the information was trustworthy.

But, you just made the positive claim that his donor received that information from someone else.

So, just provide us a link to back up your claim.

I'll wait here.

In addition to building support, these Bloomberg advocates are bolstering another message Bloomberg and his team have conveyed at private events with the candidate.

The posture isn't overtly "please don't donate to other candidates" but that's clearly the strategy, said three wealthy donors familiar with the Bloomberg effort. Bloomberg's strategy could undermine fundraising for former Vice President Joe Biden and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg -- two moderate candidates with platforms and positions that are similar to Bloomberg's and who have also courted deep-pocketed donors to fund their campaigns.

If after seeing the way she kicked his ass and switched a Bloomberg supporter like me to be on her side doesn’t convince you she will kick Trump’s ass up and down the sidewalk, I don’t know what will. I just donated big time to her campaign. She is the unity candidate. I would not worry too much about Bloomberg. After the way she took him down he will perform very poorly when actual votes are cast. He will drop out when he sees the writing on the wall and realizes he will do more harm than good. Bloomberg is interested in two things. Blocking Bernie from being the nominee and taking down Trump. Bloomberg recognizes as do I Sanders will be a disaster.

They are on their own side. Leave everything as is, so they can continue to abuse the general population of America.

So, they are going to give to whoever they think will give them more of our nation's stolen loot.

But the majority of America is Not filthy rich and as long as we don't buy the propaganda and keep a clear head, we can overwhelm their carefully crafted, Russian supported, cheat machine.

Wealth, power, status, even being white or male in America are all privileges that people want to hold on to.

Our Democratic party is about equality and treating marginalized communities with respect. Let's train our fury on those who wish to divide us. Like the Russians. Like Trump.

But if Bloomberg (or anyone else) is our Democratic nominee, I will crawl over broken glass to support and vote for them.

Bernie Sanders harshly criticized the wealth of US senators during his first campaign for office in 1971, calling it "immoral" that half the members of the Senate were millionaires.

If they got their wealth from selling wares on Amazon and at Walmart, does it mean that it's not "filthy rich?"
