Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumLet's be honest: Joe Biden is NOT leading in Presidential Primary polls...
The IDEA of Joe Biden is leading. The MEMORY of Joe Biden is leading. The average voter remembers Joe from his time as VP, and MAYBE something about his time as a Senator. But they don't really have an understanding of what his issues are (other than, maybe "pro working-class" . I suspect that once he actually gets in and is scrutinized, his lead will drop.

(31,464 posts)I did campaign work for her several years ago. She was a royal pain back then, but seemed okay, like she had a grasp of the issue. Now all I hear is condescension and a well-scripted stump speech. I have to admit, her kneecapping of Al Franken didnt help.

(31,464 posts)That sounds like the petty stuff that was hurled at Clinton. Her voice shouldn't have anything to do with anything. You never hear people dissing male Congress critters as having annoying voices. There is so much more on which to base your disdain. But Gilibrand seems to be pressing all the right (wrong) buttons with me right now; her voice is the least of my concerns.

(42,862 posts)It's something comes across as being timid and lacking in a presence that commands attention and respect from world leaders. That's not the demeanor that inspires confidence and it's not what I'm looking for in a presidential candidate. As part of the entire package and presentation, I believe it's valid and legitimate to comment on it. That's my personal opinion, and clearly others have differing opinions. People disagree. There's no need for anyone to make it personal and hurl insults at me.

(7,142 posts)that's my opinion. My rebuttal to that is, I voted for Joe in a primary because he was a strong union, pro worker man. Being pro worker in the 80's is the same IMO as being pro worker, pro union in 2019.
Values and sincerity never get old, hell, I'm looking for an FDR Democrat to vote for. Maybe we Democrats should go back to being old fashioned Democrats instead of some new hybrid?

So nothing has happened to change the labor landscape in 35 to 40 years!?!
No, to be pro-worker now means addressing a very different world. It is more subsistence, less unionized and more mechanized than in the 1980s. The costs of healthcare, access to healthcare, and cost of college have all changed. These services are less likely to be covered by the employer and disproportionately more expensive.
His historical pro-union positions mean nothing to most workers today.
We really need a leader focused on the next 35 years, not the last 35. Right now, Bidens position is essentially no position at all until he announces.

(16,887 posts)....Trump. I am a big Harris and Biden fan and I believe the winning combo is a ticket that includes a white male that can give comfort to those disenfranchised Republicans who cant stand Trump and the white working class in the south and States like Texas and who has vast foreign policy experience and who will be able to help us clean up the mess that Trump leaves us. The ticket also needs a minority and a woman and Harris fills both. She alsobwill win California big and is smart and a fighter. Biden and Harris are smart and fighters.
I believe based on all this that the best ticket to take on Trump is a Biden and Harris ticket, either as Biden/Harris or Harris/Biden.
This is the ticket Trump fears. And will win.

Here he is in October attacking Bernie Sanders. By your logic, Sanders is the ticket he fears most.

(10,831 posts)I think a Biden/Harris ticket would wipe the floor with Trump and his enablers. And I disagree with the premise of this op-ed: Biden's numbers will shoot up the day he announces. His numbers are strong now and will go up as the pre-primary/primary rolls on.
Biden can beat Trump decisively which is the reason I'm supporting him. Electability in 2020 is everything. Put Harris on that ticket and we're turbo-charged.
It is the ticket that Trump fears. With good reason.

(3,032 posts)Just stop and think. His primary with Clinton was a long one. You would assume Clintons oppo research used what there was domestically. To have NOT done it would be the worst sort of incompetence on her part. She always struck me as VERY competent. His background is largely known.
In my opinion, Sanders greater weakness is from Putin. Who is to say what is in the KGB files from his Russia visit? Putin could make anything up. Sanders was there. An 11th hour scandal a la her emails and a Trump FBI that is taking it seriously, would be all it takes with him. Thats a big weakness to me.

(31,464 posts)I have the utmost respect for him. My criticism is about Noonan, and taking "advise" from her like. Biden is currently not my first choice. There is a large field, and it appears to be growing. I'll reserve judgment until I can compare and contrast our entire slate. If Biden comes out on top I would not hesitate casting my vote for him.

(173 posts)two years of the Trump Presidency. I think in the last election, people were looking for change, which is why (IMHO) Sanders was the right candidate for that election. In this election, I think younger voters are still looking for change, while older voters may be looking for more stability, so it is not as clear who would be best and perhaps it is neither Biden nor Sanders. I agree that Biden's star will fade somewhat has his record comes into view.

(23,105 posts)I think people saw how good he was as VP and want more of the same smart, kind, caring, tough, knowledgeable person. I expect him to totally rock it in the debates. I do agree with wanting him to get in the race, but that could just be my selfish wish. From what I've heard this week, it does sound like he's definitely running.
Bring on the debates!

And, yes, older politicians will have to explain records from the dark 1990s, when tens of millions of Democrats voted for candidates who promised more conservative policies, notably including Republicans, and threw liberals who refused to bend their principles out of office.
Many articles questioned if the Democratic Party would survive at all, much less have be able to keep enough Democrats in office to protect America's New Deal legacy from the Republicans determined to wipe it out.

(428 posts)...In Joe we'd have an "electable" moderate candidate who will appeal to independents, "knows his way around Washington", and has the "experience to lead on day one" and who has been "vetted for years" and will "take the fight to Trump".
I mean really, how is it possible that we could lose with that approach against a candidate like Trump?

(63,912 posts)he prolly figured out that Trump's people would just denigrate and denigrate and just try to wear him and his campaign folks down. He might have thought he'd do more by staying where he is.
Too bad. Trump's gangster tactics are keeping good people out. They see Trump denigrating Elizabeth Warren with the Pocahontas crap, which is bound to lower the whole campaign to the rock bottom, while she tries and tries to talk about economic fairness in our country.
How long does he get away with this?
