(24,123 posts)With a few more victories like that, Bernie will have the nomination wrapped up and then, obviously, he'll have to withdraw from the race... it's depressing just thinkin' bout Bernie's last three victories and all the ones to come.

(3,855 posts)Specifically, he is what Democrats used to be and what many think they should be. Indeed that is what many still think the Democrats are, which explains why so many Warren and Biden and Buttigieg supporters list Sanders as their second choice.
People aren't looking for a little "D" by a candidate's name. They are looking at what those candidates stand for.
That is why the whole "Bernie isn't a Democrat" attack never flew. And never will.

Neither would Johnson.
Both were pragmatic Democrats.
Not socialists. Not ideologues.

(3,855 posts)If student debt has been an issue back then, I think FDR most certainly would have forgiven it.
FDR was very practical. This means he understood that money that is tied up in debt is money that isn't' going into the economy. A trillion and a half in debt for people trying to get ahead in life just isn't sustainable.

(10,476 posts)Ronald Reagan attended Harvard in 1936, had a scholarship pay the $400 tuition, and he worked as an usher to cover room and board.
Harvard tuition today is $46,340, and I think it's safe to say that working as an usher today would not cover much of that.

(115,869 posts)FDR was a devout capitalist who implemented the New Deal programs as emergency measures to shore up the economy against the Depression by providing jobs and other benefits. FDR made it very clear that he was not a socialist of any stripe, and actual socialists disliked him as much as the right-wingers did. He said that he was following tradition as well as necessity by striving to use government to put idle money and idle men to work, to increase our public wealth and to build up the health and strength of the peopleto help our system of private enterprise to function again. https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/fireside-chat-15#axzz1sbeKIkza

(628 posts)If you look at his policies, especially monetary policy.
This is part of the reason why it is so difficult to fathom why Senator Sanders insists on calling himself a "democratic socialist", and spends so much time bashing democrats. It just seems so self defeating.
On paper, Senator Sanders is a little to the right of Dwight Eisenhower (look at Eisenhower's top tax rate, if you don't believe me).
This country may have a far left, but wherever they are, it isn't in politics.
Though sometimes the current administration does operate like nihilistic anarchists and that is the far left. That appears to be a blip coming from the feudal state the GOP is attempting to create.
What is feudalism? Left? Right? Center?
I don't know.
I do know this. I was not so blessed to be born in the U.S.A. to die somebody's serf.

(5,275 posts)Go take a look at where Hoover had the top marginal tax rate and where FDR raised it to....in effect taxing the Hell out of himself.
Not sure there is a lot of reason for desperation in the Sanders camp right now either, think there is way more desperation in the Biden camp from the results so far. Sanders or his camp would seem to have no reason for desperation at this point.

(25,648 posts)From what I can tell it comes from the idea that once upon a time, because of McGovern's loss, the party decided that New Deal policies wouldn't win elections ever again so they became same as Republicans, except kind of worse. Bernie reintroduced New Deal policies and all the establishment elites exclaimed, "Bernie, that's radical! Why, we haven't thought of universal health care or inequality or climate change or finance reform, like, AT ALL in many many decades! We only care about the Wall Street and Big Pharma and billionaire money that is corrupting us and making status quo! We are TERRIFIED at your same stump speech and seven minute abs policies!"

(51,726 posts)Bernie has spent his entire adult life bashing the Democratic Party.
His hero is Socialist Eugene Debs, not FDR.
Bernie made a glowing documentary of Debs:
Bernie admiringly recites Debs speeches from memory:
This, and much much more, will all be common knowledge by the time of the general election. The GOP attack ads will be brutal and effective. Nina will be no help.
It will be a bloodbath.
God help us all.
