Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhy can't every state have their primary on the same Saturday?
And why can't they do away with caucuses and open primaries?
Does that just make too much sense?

(13,110 posts)This country does many many things that make no sense.
One of my favorites, corporations are people.
This makes no sense to anyone with a functioning brain.
Corporations have the rights of people and the rights of corporations.
It didn't make sense to keep marijuana illegal for decade after decade.
It still doesn't make sense.
This country can really be fucking dumb at times.
It all boils down to greed, corruption, and power.
There is no other explanation for the current state of our government.

(571 posts)1. only billionaires have the funding to campaign in every state at once. There would never be another grass roots movement that gains momentum. We would have nothing but Bloombergs and Steyers going forward, because theyd be the only one who could afford it.
2. By having a quick single day primary, we lose the ability to vet candidates. A candidate could win it all, and then we find out some horrible thing about them and then have no ability for a course correct.
The solution is to rotate the order, so every state gets the chance to be early in the process.
but you need the ability for campaigns to start small and then grow over time.
Without it, we wouldnt have had a Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, or Barack Obama.

But can you imagine a process where that arrangement could be enforced? A few election cycles ago, New Hampshire even threatened to move their primary back to December when some other states tried to steal their first in-nation status.

(497 posts)why not put an absolute limit on how much money is spent on a campaign even if it is their own, so that billionaires like Bloomberg cant come in after 4 primaries and be a spoiler. Also, a ban on Republicans voting in any primaries. Also, you need to be a member of the Democratic Party for at least 5 years before running to represent the party.
Just a thought

(10,721 posts)Each candidate is given the same amount of money and that's all they can spend. They campaign all across the country for a year and then we hold a national primary several months before the general election.
