From Newsweek:
Pete Buttigieg offered advice during a campaign rally to a 9-year-old boy who asked him for help coming out as gay.
Zachary Ro joined Buttigieg, who has become the first openly gay candidate to run for president, on stage after his question was read out at the rally in Denver on Saturday night.
"Thank you for being so brave. Would you help me tell the world I'm gay too? I want to be brave like you," he wrote in a pre-submitted question that was read to Buttigieg by Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, The Colorado Sun reported

(38,582 posts)That kid is already brave.
I think that's a tough question to answer for a 9 year-old. I don't think the kid needs to be ashamed of who he is, but I also don't think that at the age of 9 he needs to announce anything to anyone. I think a lot of people may not take him seriously. (And yes, that's their issue, not his.)
He's already brave.

(139 posts)I'm really surprised that a campaign event would choose a question from a minor that catapults him into the public eye and opens him up to a variety of situations, not all of which may prove to be supportive.
If I were Buttigiege, I think I would make sure this situation doesn't repeat itself with regards to a minor who hasn't reached puberty wanting to come out on the national stage. Those who are adults I think are more equipped to handle the situation after the supportive crowds and spotlight have gone.
Maybe I'm overthinking this.

(7,113 posts)Why should a gay man be blocked from doing the same?
Sure, some idiots still equate gay men with pedophiles, but why should Pete cater to an ill-informed, hateful, and homophobic segment not likely to vote for Pete, let alone Dem?

(139 posts)I agree that it's okay to take questions from kids but I think some issues shouldn't be aired on the air. Maybe as a mother of a gay son I'm remembering how people can be unkind when no one is around. As I said, I may be overthinking this from a parent's perspective of wanting to protect one's child. I think it also puts the campaign at risk should there be repercussions towards the child. Taking a question from a minor about climate change is different from taking a question about one's sexuality. The LGBTQ community has made great strides but there are still a lot of haters out there.

(7,113 posts)But as black lesbian writer Audrey Lorde said, "Your silence will not protect you."
For some LGBTQ kids, staying closeted isn't an option, as bullies and other haters can ID them as different and attack anyway.
Luckily for kids today vs. those even a decade or two ago, most schools have gay-straight alliances now, and younger folks in general are more accepting of LGBTQ folks.
That said, Trump has given all haters a greenlight to act, but that is exactly why the leadership and kindness from Pete is so influential, and not just for that one 9-year-old boy.
