Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWe have had only 3 states so far.
Many people around here are acting like we have a nominee.
We're not even close yet.
Am I missing something?

(11,495 posts)caucuses! Iowa was a disaster and I still don't know the total count from Nevada. I hate caucuses because a vast majority of voters don't get out and vote like they could in a primary.
We need to stop the caucuses and go with primaries so we can actually get the majority voters to pick the person they want instead of letting a handful of voters decide who should win.

(11,996 posts)leads to no delegates.
What they're saying: Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg's top strategist, said: "The fact is if the state of this race remains status quo with Biden, Pete and Amy in the race on Super Tuesday Bernie is likely to open up a delegate lead that seems nearly impossible to overcome."
"I dont think many people understand the dire circumstances here."
Why it matters: Based on every national poll, plus steady access to money, Sanders is the indisputable if underappreciated frontrunner.
The Bloomberg campaign got high-profile validation of its theory:
David Plouffe, Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager, tweeted in response to Nate Silver's delegate projections through Super Tuesday which show Sanders with 41%, followed by Bloomberg and Joe Biden with 18% each.
"If this happens, Sanders would have a pledged delegate lead hell never relinquish."

(10,721 posts)As I kept saying to Sanders supporters in 2016, one simply can't win the Democratic Party nomination if one is getting crushed among persons of color (4 years later and Sanders has an incredibly diverse base of support). Like I said yesterday as soon as the Nevada entrance poll data appeared (acknowledging that entrance and exit poll data is not entirely trustworthy), this is now a Sanders vs. Biden race.
Buttigieg and Klobuchar have no path. Warren doesn't either, but she may have an incentive to stay in if she thinks there will be a brokered convention.
There are reasons why the 538 forecast looks the way it does: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-primary-forecast/?ex_cid=rrpromo.

(10,721 posts)Iowa was essentially nullified by Harkin being in the race. And it was Clinton's very strong 2nd place finish in New Hampshire, and the resulting comeback kid narrative, that propelled him forward. No candidate was doing very well in the early going. The biggest threat Clinton ever faced was Jerry Brown, and that threat was short-lived.
Clinton took the biggest prize (Georgia) on Super Tuesday and was 2nd in Maryland. After that, he dominated.
But, yes, Clinton is the lone candidate - over the last 40 years - from either party who has won the nomination without winning either IA or NH. South Carolina and Super Tuesday upcoming will tell us if that might happen for just the 2nd time.

(47,613 posts)So we should all pack it up and go home now. Obviously all the other 47 states will be pretty much the same!
Or maybe we can just hang in there and give the rest of the country a chance to vote before anyone declares victory.

(253 posts)Yes, you are right William769. It is too early to declare a nominee with results from only 3 states. Let's remain calm and see what happens ---Super Tuesday is around the corner and we shall see what transpires.
