Bloomberg Adviser: Sanders Said Toddlers 'Should Run Around Naked and Touch Each Other's Genitals'

That's not quite the full Mediaite headline, which wouldn't fit above:

Bloomberg Adviser Goes There: Bernie Sanders Said Toddlers ‘Should Run Around Naked and Touch Each Other’s Genitals’

Article with video:

https://www.mediaite.com/tv/bloomberg-spox-rips-bernies-loopy-comments-said-toddlers-should-run-around-naked-and-touch-each-others-genitals/

Bloomberg senior advisor Tim O’Brien appeared on CNN’s New Day and went after some past comments made by current Democratic presidential frontrunner, Bernie Sanders. Since he has won two of the first three primary/caucus events, the opposition research against the Independent Vermont senator has flowed in a relentless fashion.

-snip-

“We have a candidate who has risen in the polls because of this track record,” O’Brien said. “Bernie has loopy stuff in his background, saying women get cancer from having too many orgasms or toddlers should run around naked and touch each other’s genitals to insulate themselves from porn?”

Speaking for a nation of New Day viewers, Camerota exclaimed “What?!”

O’Brien was undeterred, asking why this “loony side of Bernie” has not yet surfaced. Well, here it is, in all its super weird splendor.

-snip-

More at the link, including the quote from that essay, unearthed by Mother Jones.

The Mediaite article was written by a self-described "child of the 70s" who admits that was "a fairly weird time" but adds that this view of Sanders' was "not a traditional political position to say the least."
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

He won’t be the nominee because you are correct, our Republic, our Constitution, our citizens, the world....is fucked if he is.

He can’t win FL, PA, WI, MI, AZ and other swing states and the nominee has to win these states to win.

He will not get moderate Republicans who are disgusted with Trump. He will cost us House and Senate seats.

I am at a loss right now to even describe my disgust with what is happening and how blind people are and especially the Bernie fanatics if they think he is their savior. They have no idea what chaos and hell will be coming and Sanders notbonly can’t win, but if he does by some miracle win with what will be unleashed on him, that he will never pass the things he has promised without raising taxes on all of the middle class. This, as we are about to go into a world economic recession will not work out well.

In an attempt at humor Bernie wrote a tongue- in-cheek essay entitled “On Education.” Our education system is turning kids into sexually repressed worker drones. In a 1969 essay he wrote in the Freeman, “In Vermont, at a state beach, a mother is reprimanded by Authority for allowing her 6-month-old daughter to go about without her diapers on. Now, if children go around naked, they are liable to see each other’s sexual organs, and maybe even touch them. Terrible thing! If we raise children up like this it will probably ruin the whole pornography business, not to mention the large segment of the general economy which makes its money by playing on people’s sexual frustrations.”

You do know what tongue in cheek means? Just kidding? Promise me that you will never read Lolita. Lolita it is a 1955 "tongue-in-cheek erotic novel" written by Russian American novelist Vladimir Nabokov. Vladimir Nabokov was a teacher of languages at Stanford, California. Later, he joined as a professor of literature at Wellesley College, Massachusetts. Being a multi-talented person, Nabokov was famous for his plays, funny sketches for 'New Yorker', criticism and stirring short stories. His research in entomology, especially the discovery of "Nabokov's wood nymph" made him famous at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University. Nabokov has so much talent that it's unbelievable.

I am not a prude but know a couple who did not think it was cute when they got the call about inappropriate touching.

I mean, I could see if there was some case in the news re: the subject, someone saying 'it's really not abnormal for small children to do this with each other' or something to that effect, but ... implying that they should be encouraged to do this ... seems pretty odd.

Was there some study he possibly read, or is this entirely his own idea?

Sanders and his campaign settled several sexual harassment lawsuits that arose during his last failed run at the nomination:

...

Becker also oversaw a pair of employees in Iowa and Illinois who lodged a federal discrimination complaint against the campaign that resulted in a previously undisclosed $30,000 settlement, according to a copy of the agreement viewed by POLITICO. The former staffers are still restricted from talking about the underlying accusations, but two sources with knowledge of the complaint said that Becker was a central target of the claim.

Please remember an important distinction, Bernie is not the culprit. Bloomberg is not who he says he is. Bernie is nothing like him.

( The Company, through its male managers and employees from Chief Executive Officer Bloomberg on down, engaged in a pattern and practice of sexual harassment, sexual degradation of women, and discrimination against plaintiff because of her national origin.)

13. That view of childhood was never popular, but was not that uncommon
Tue Feb 25, 2020, 11:57 AM
Feb 2020

back in the early 1970s. It was a view held by many progressive voices, particularly in Europe. But it was always a small minority who thought young children should run around naked and be free to be curious. There was a scandalous sex education book targeting very young children and their parents, with the title, "Show Me!" It was sold in the US for a short time in just about every book store. Soon, though, it was no longer available, due to the protests against it.

There was also a school in one Scandinavian country when children did run around naked all the time. That was also treated as scandalous in the USA.

That philosophy of child-rearing existed at the time, though, and was popular with some, including Bernie, apparently. It was also discarded by most people as not a good idea.

I have no solid opinion on the matter.

Not at all. Most people in this country cringe over ideas like that, whether or not they might actually be OK and useful ideas.

The late 60s and early 70s were full of different approaches to things. There were X-rated movies in regular theaters. Books like Joy of Sex were best-sellers. All such books are gone these days. As a young adult in that era, I remember a lot of things like those that showed up, and then disappeared fairly quickly. I found it all very interesting.

I remember seeing a movie with the title "Friends." in 1972, I think. It had a soundtrack by Elton John, and came out about the same time as his first album. It was a French film, about two runaway young teenagers in the Camargue coastal region of France. They found each other, fell in love, and lived in an abandoned little house. They had a child together at about age 14-15. It was beautifully filmed and nominated for several awards, particularly in Europe.

Here, it was shown in a few smaller theaters, but soon disappeared, due to its frank approach about adolescent sexuality. Few saw it. Few know about the soundtrack album or that Elton John and Bernie Taupin did some of their best early songs for that soundtrack. Nobody knows about it, because US sensibilities were simply not capable of accepting such a film.

As far as I know, it's not available on DVD, although I remember seeing VHS recordings of it at the time. I saw it in a small theater in a small town that regularly showed foreign films and b-movies.

So far, though, I've never met anyone who even knows the film was made.

The main reason I supported Biden was the electability issue. His recent meltdowns have erased that advantage. Warren has also shown that she cannot get the groundswell of support needed to win a General Election.
Dems don't win without an enthusiastic turnout by minority and young voters, and it is Sanders that has captured that momentum.

And any definition of a "sympathy vote" would not apply to the current leader and presumptive winner.

The Mother Jones article said much of it was tongue in cheek. There is a larger quote from the writing:

In a 1969 essay in the Freeman, he wrote, “In Vermont, at a state beach, a mother is reprimanded by Authority for allowing her 6 month old daughter to go about without her diapers on. Now, if children go around naked, they are liable to see each others sexual organs, and maybe even touch them. Terrible thing! If we [raise] children up like this it will probably ruin the whole pornography business, not to mention the large segment of the general economy which makes its money by playing on peoples sexual frustrations.”

It should be noted that back in the 60s and 70s many people would occasionally let their very young children run around naked at home and even at places like a park. People back then we're much less aware of pedophiles and didn't see any harm in letting small children frolic in their birthday suits. So he wasn't really talking about encouraging children to touch each other, just speculating that they might. And he wasn't talking about school.

There was a lot of crazy crap being said in the 60s regarding child-rearing, sex, nudity, and all sorts of things.

The full quote regarding naked children was:

In Vermont, at a state beach, a mother is reprimanded by Authority for allowing her 6 month old daughter to go about without her diapers on. Now, if children go around naked, they are liable to see each others sexual organs, and maybe even touch them. Terrible thing! If we [raise] children up like this it will probably ruin the whole pornography business, not to mention the large segment of the general economy which makes its money by playing on peoples sexual frustrations.

Now, seriously. Are you going to call the cops because your friend's kid hates clothes? No. Is it truly damaging to children, in and of itself, to see each other in their skins? How many of us had a kid try to "play doctor" with us, as in a same-age peer, or wanted to be the "doctor"? Most of this was healthy.

It was adults who messed it up, and not by Bernie writing these kind of essays. And while predators *might* consider a child whose parents aren't as concerned about toddler nudity as a target for abuse, we know that all they have to do is gain the trust of said child and said parent for things to go wrong. And that happens with and without clothes.

These writings, at least regarding children, are not Walter Breen-level essays.

There was much worse written then. Much, much worse than being upset a 6 month old isn't allowed to air a bottom in public and therefore going out on a speculative limb that maybe if kids played doctor they'd be less into pr0n.

Because sex offenders “are everywhere”.

When my kids were toddlers in Hawaii, I let them go naked on the beach. Many parents did. (No kid wants sand in their diapers.)

We were there watching them and we didn’t worry about sex offenders everywhere. The kids were as Mother Nature made them. It seems we’ve strayed far from our natural beings, all based on fear.
