Sanders Says He'll Attract a Wave of New Voters. It Hasn't Happened.

It is is the most politically provocative part of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign pitch: that his progressive movement will bring millions of nonvoters into the November election, driving record turnout especially among disaffected working-class Americans and young people.

And yet despite a virtual tie in Iowa, a narrow victory in New Hampshire and a big triumph in Nevada, the first three nominating contests reveal a fundamental challenge for Sanders’ political revolution: He may be winning, but not because of his long-standing pledge to expand the Democratic base.

The results so far show that Sanders has prevailed by broadening his appeal among traditional Democratic voters, not by fundamentally transforming the electorate.
In Iowa, for instance, turnout for the caucuses was lower than expected, up 3% compared with 2016, and the increase was concentrated in more well-educated areas where Sanders struggled, according to a New York Times analysis; in the Iowa precincts where Sanders won, turnout increased by only 1 percentage point.
There was no sign of a Sanders voter surge in New Hampshire either, nor Saturday in Nevada, where the nearly final results indicated that turnout would finish above 2016 but well short of 2008 levels, despite a decade of population growth and a new early voting option that attracted some 75,000 voters. The low numbers are all the more striking given the huge turnout in the 2018 midterm elections, which was the highest in a century.

snip

“I grant that the turnouts aren’t at the level that we would hope,” Rep. Ro Khanna of California, one of the campaign’s national co-chairs, said before the Nevada caucuses.

If Sanders is unable to bring in new voters in states with open Primaries, what are his chances of doing so against Trump in November?

Like Trump, for example?

Lots of crossover voters in open caucuses and primaries.

State Democratic Party officials need to get rid of caucuses and open primaries. Too many 'loopholes' for malignant forces to eff around in Democratic primary elections!

It's no big secret that Putin believes Biden is detrimental to his conquest of the world.

A united United States & Europe is detrimental to Putin's plans to revive the USSR and expand it beyond his oligarch's dream, and a strong President who'll follow the footsteps of President Obama is just the thing he can't afford.

of primaries and caucuses. With only a tiny sliver of primaries and caucuses undertaken, to attempt to analyze trends this early would be kind of misleading.

than Sanders. Or sanders may be able to deliver on his promise.

Still, for someone who made this a cornerstone of his campaign, not a good start. Perhaps Bernie was too early to put such an emphasis on this.

without too much on their part. I don't blame them, if they attract new voters without costing them too much, that's a bonus.

You are right, for someone to rely on this as part of his campaign, not a good start. Maybe it'll pick up, but I think with so many candidates in the fray, it's difficult to stand out, perhaps?

8. What, no great wave of inspired new Bernie voters?

I’d like to remind the puppies-and-unicorns set that Bernie’s predictions of waves of new voters are already going awry. If there were such waves, they’d not only be cresting, but total Democratic voter turn-out would not only be above 2016, it would be well above 2008.

We older voters are not wary of Bernie-phile claims of new voters just because we’re old fuddy-duddies.

We’ve seen our hopes raised and dashed multiple times these last twenty years when the claims that not only will lots of new voters would be registered, but that they’d turn out to vote. They didn’t. We lost.

The Republicans won.

We aren’t just skeptical just because these magical new voters didn’t turn out in droves in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. It’s because voting patterns seem to be following their older brothers’ and sisters’, the people who let us down multiple times in years past.

If I sound bitter, perhaps I am. My experience has not been heartening.

Early voting for Super Tuesday has already started. If the Bernie fans want to prove their great waves of new voters, they need to start producing them NOW.

I DON’T want to wake up after Election Day and find that Trump has not only been re-elected, but that someone’s little dog Toto has pulled aside the curtain and revealed an old man who couldn’t deliver what he promised.

Hillary barely lost MI, Bernie beat her there by far more than the margin she lost by, AND the voting was a mess of disenfranchisement and insufficient inventory of voting equipment. This time around the election is being run by fabulous Dem leadership.
