Democratic Primaries

The only people who were more excited about Bernie Sanderss win in Nevada than Sanders and his supporters were Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Trump wants a second term so that he can stay out of jail and kill American democracy once and for all. Putin wants a weakened America so that his Russia can regain status as an important player in the worlds politics. Both, rightly or wrongly, believe that of all the Democratic candidates, Bernie Sanders is the easiest one for Trump to beat
Its just as possible that Sanders may opt for a more authoritarian approach especially if Congress is as resistant to his ideas as it is to Trumps. Its this possibility that concerns me. And that concern grew when we learned that Sanders knew about Russian efforts to help his campaign for a month before he said anything

(50 posts)and of course them are all evil parasites that need to be eradicated. The solution to defeat them for the right is nativism and for the left its socialism. I dont think its either one myself. Populism doesnt resonate with me, its too rigid and simplistic.

(29,322 posts)Especially this -- Its because we dont know how much of the Sanders base is comprised of revolutionaries whose approach is more consistent with authoritarianism.
I care about Democracy which is why I want the person with the most votes to win the primary.
A Tale of Two Democrats: How Authoritarianism Divides the Democratic Party
Authoritarianism has been predominantly utilized in American politics as a predictor of Republican identification and conservative policy preferences. We argue that this approach has neglected the role authoritarianism plays among Democrats and how it can operate within political parties regardless of their ideological orientation. Drawing from three distinct sets of data, we demonstrate the impact of authoritarianism in the 2016 Democratic Partys primaries. Authoritarianism consistently predicts differences in primary voting among Democrats, particularly support for Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. This effect is robust across various model specifications including controls for ideology, partisan strength, and other predispositions. These results highlight the potential of authoritarianism to shape leadership preferences within the Democratic Party. We advocate for a reconsideration of authoritarianism as a disposition with meaningful consequences for intraparty dynamics and conclude with practical implications regarding the future of the Democratic Party.
