Sanders’ rise fuels Dems’ angst over keeping House control

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Bernie Sanders’ ascendancy as Democrats’ leading presidential hopeful fueled growing unease as lawmakers openly expressed anxiety that the self-proclaimed democratic socialist could cost them House control and questions abounded over what party leaders should do.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., projected calm — and neutrality — on Wednesday as she batted away reporters’ queries about whether it was time for her to try thwarting Sanders to protect her party’s majority.

“We’re not going to lose the House,” she said. “We’re going to be united by whomever is the candidate for president. But we are taking responsibility for winning the House, and we’re not assuming anything. But we feel very confident.”

She delivered a similar message to colleagues at a closed-door meeting Wednesday morning, when she told them, “We cannot show any division. This has to be about unity, unity, unity.” Her remarks were described by a Democratic aide on the condition of anonymity to relay private comments.

Yet with Sanders, I-Vt., riding high after early nominating contest wins in New Hampshire and Nevada and a virtual first-place tie in Iowa, other House Democrats were less sanguine.

The best they can for them. No excuses. Instead of complaining, they should be knocking on doors and holding town halls explaining they are doing great for their districts. Too many of them don’t even have to campaign. Get to work!

A Sanders and Trump matchup would be akin to the Dukakis and Bush Sr. race. No chance that Sanders would carry the rust belt states, and the effect throughout the country would be felt down the ticket. There's a reason that the GOP and Trump have not attacked Sanders, but have slammed Biden and Bloomberg, and to a lesser extent Warren and Pete, it's because they want to face Sanders. The attack ads will range from Socialist, career politician, no major bills in 30 years written and passed by Sanders, health issues, etc...

Republicans are doing the same thing. They’ll regret it in November.

7. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will be the next speaker come 2021

THE TUMULTUOUS POLITICAL CLIMATE has given fresh hope to REPUBLICANS, who were privately skeptical of TRUMP’S prediction that House Minority Leader KEVIN MCCARTHY will be the next speaker come 2021. Internal polling commissioned by the NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE showed that voters in districts targeted by both parties are skeptical of SANDERS -- his approval rating is 42%, and disapproval stands at 53% -- which they believe will help boost their candidates for the House. In these districts, voters prefer TRUMP, 48% to 43%. If SANDERS is atop the ticket, Republicans believe, they can credibly label every Democrat a socialist without fear of overreach.
