As a gay man, Pete Buttigieg's campaign meant the world to me.

Buttigieg and Biden were the only two campaigns I donated to.

As some of you know, I'd been torn between my passion for Pete and the practicality of a Biden candidacy. After talking with friends last night, I decided to vote for Pete on Tuesday because I longed my whole life to vote for a gay man for President.

I can't speak for all members of the LGBT community, but I can speak for me.

I grew up in a town where alcohol was illegal and where being gay could get you killed. I still see a therapist each Tuesday and discuss school bullying that left me with both mental scars and physical scars.

In the mid 2000's I witnessed a gay man stabbed outside a gay club in NC. We called 911 on my phone. It was a red phone and the droplets of blood blended in with the paint. There was so much blood. I remember that so vividly. He had on white pants and there was just... so much blood. I remember thinking, 'I can't believe how much they hate us when we never hated them.'

I wanted to do things in politics but never did because the rest of the world saw being gay as a stain that could never wash out.

I never thought I'd see the change I've seen in my lifetime. Never.

I cried the night of the Iowa caucuses.

What Pete did was bigger than politics. He gave me the hope that, somewhere out there, some kid in some small town might see him speak at a rally, or on TV, and it would help them through their day.

Thank you, Pete Buttigieg. May you be remembered for this forever.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Not just for the symbolic pride in seeing a talented gay man go so far, and comport himself so beautifully throughout. He gave me hope for the future, for the generation to come. He represents my kids’ generation, and he is exactly what I would want for them. (My son, holding one of his own new twin infants today, told me Pete was his first choice, too.)

I’m sorry for what you had to endure. I hope you can see how much you are respected when you think about the way the public embraced this stellar gay man and his husband.

The story of the poor man's stabbing you told is so moving. I'm sorry you were there to see that but glad you were there to help. Did he survive?

I caught myself near the end of debates I watched this cycle suddenly remembering (typically in response to his closing statement) that Buttigieg is gay. His preferences simply didn't define him. He was just another very qualified person (with an astonishing debate skillset) running for president. His private preferences don't matter to right-thinking people and he helped promote that understanding among, I hope, countless young people everywhere.

From a practical standpoint and as a Biden supporter, I really admire his decision to end his campaign today. He wants to see Trump defeated and realized that the best way to assist that effort was to bow out.

I would like him to run for governor or U.S. senator in Indiana.

And we lost him. Why, from what I hear it's because he's gay. Chicago Ill has a gay female mayor. Who voted for her? Blacks and Latinos. I think the media and these polling companies are really controlling the outcome of this election. They want trump. Now we're stuck with two old dudes, both of whom could croak before November (sanders already had a mild heart attack). And then there's the two females neither of them are as popular as the other candidates and they face the same stupid discrimination bias as buttigieg. Trump must be jumping for joy. I’m one of many who was impressed with Mayor Pete. Once you started listening to him, what he said, how he said it, how much he knew and understood and had given thought to and aimed for, his personal life faded farther and farther into the background.

I liked his intellect and his way of assessing things. And I REALLY like his youth - he has a LOT of time to build for the future. He made a mighty impressive debut on the national stage, and he made a good impression on a lot of America. And he earned that. He has nowhere to go but up.

When Clinton started his campaign, he was back in the pack, and I didn't think he was going to amount to anything. But he methodically worked his way out of the crowd to the lead and then had a great 2 term Presidency. I think Mr. Buttigieg has that kind of political ability. I like him especially because he is young, canny, and decent. I saw a picture of him the other day, and I thought he looked like JFK.

I hope that he remains on our political stage, even if for now he helps shape policy. We need young energetic people as much as we need experienced old-timers.

On a personal note, I hope your life is easier as time goes on, and you are surrounded by people who love you and appreciate your abilities.

I was proud, as a straight man, that Pete was able to go as far as he did. He is young and talented, I am convinced that he will go far in American politics. Times have changed!

I can only echo your sentiments. I was a bit bowled over hearing he'd won the Iowa caucus.
Having to resort to extreme measures to ensure my safety from the Westboro and other "religious" ilk in a small town in 1976, I also struggle with some PTSD issues. I was under a terribly poor impression of rural midwestern small towns I can't help. Not that I'd seek out any of the homophobic mob who tortured me to see if any of them have changed.
There's a fairly accurate picture I have of most of them, the ones who aren't serving time that is, of Red-hatted MAGA nutjobs complaining about socialism while collecting their S.S. disability checks. Well armed, angry fools who think they need to be armed to the teeth for when Ru Paul comes to force them to wear dresses and makeup, listening to the latest pResidential Medal of Freedom recipient rant on their front porch radios. Certainly enough looking at the 2016 election results map of that area, they went for Trump.... only a tiny sliver of blue.
The perfect nightmare scenario for me, far scarier than any Freddy Krooger or Nosferatu. Although I do keep a quart of blood in the fridge for the latter since he lives nearbly and looks really hungry most of the time.
It's about time that Pete, Barney Frank and so many other openly LGBT public figures ripped back the evil veneer the radical homophobes want to project onto us. It's so satisfying watching some who previously had many Americans convinced we were so horrible discovering we're not the monsters their hate-filled preachers made us out to be... Quite the opposite, and some of those so called community leaders amount to nothing but greedy, self-serving Nazi's.
