Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBill Kristol declares Joe Biden 'the simple answer' for beating Trump
Bill Kristol has a simple case for a Joe Biden presidency.
In a post for his conservative site The Bulwark posted Monday, the neoconservative turned President Trump critic carefully broke down the remaining 2020 Democrats for the so-called "normal American." If "you don't like demagogues of the right or the left," you want someone who can win the Democratic nomination, and you're voting in a Super Tuesday state, then you should opt for the former vice president, Kristol wrote.
Kristol opens his piece with his definition of a "normal American:" Essentially, you don't want the U.S. to have to choose "between [President] Donald Trump and [Vermont Independent Sen.] Bernie Sanders in November." That leaves you with a "complex" situation, but "the answer actually is simple," Kristol continues. Neither Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) nor Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will be the nominee "despite the flashes of electoral strength each has shown," and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg isn't viable either. So "if you're inclined toward American constitutional democracy, the rule of law, and a free economic order," you'll vote for Biden, Kristol finishes.

(47,468 posts)Everything a conservative says is wrong and everything a progressive says is right??? Well that is certainly an uplifting, unifying message. There are a lot of people I don't particularly like, but I am not so blinded by political ideology, that I can't hear truth when it is shared.
I'll be so glad when this primary is over. All the mockery and sarcasm is hardly persuasive or inspiring. Do you win very many voters over with that attitude and tone? It is an awful look for a Democrat.

(47,468 posts)no mockery or sarcasm in your comment. It certainly isn't off-putting.
I've rarely found Bill Kristol to be right, but he's almost always right when he criticizes Donald Trump. I won't say he's wrong just because he is Bill Kristol.

If our country was attacked by a foreign enemy, would some of these zealots not fight with republicans in opposition to the enemy, because of political ideology?

(26,328 posts)We can thank Kristol for bringing us Sarah Palin.
You discovered her on a Weekly Standard cruise, right?
Kristol:
She invited Fred Barnes and me and our families over to lunch at the governor's residence there. And we were impressed by her. And she was charming. And she was different 42-year-old governor of Alaska, kind of an exotic state.
I had been originally for John McCain picking Joe Lieberman a centrist play against Barack Obama. And they chose not to go that way. And then I thought, 'OK, well, why not take the gamble with Palin?'But I will say this. For all the alleged dumbing down, the people who ran and won in 2010 and 2012 were pretty impressive, a lot of them. The Republican ticket in 2012 was Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. Whatever again you think of them, that's not a dumbed-down ticket. So I thought, 'OK, Palin, they didn't win.' And I thought, 'OK, she chose to be a celebrity rather than a politician.' I didn't realize that we were going into a celebrity culture such a celebrity culture that Trump would actually as a celebrity run and win in 2016.I don't think Palin really led to Trump. Was this somehow a bit of a precursor or something? I'm willing to say, 'Maybe so.'Read moreKristol on the state of the Republican PartyKristol on businesses kissing up to TrumpKristol on Fox News and Tucker Carlson

Just as the US joined with Russia to stop Hitler, sometimes you have to join with the "enemy of my enemy" in a temporary alliance.
Once Trump is removed, I am sure Kristol will be on opposite sides from us again.
But in the meantime, we'll take all the help we can get to remove the tyrant.

(47,468 posts)I don't have to like him or agree with a lot of what he did or said, but in this case, he happens to be right. I don't think there is some dark conspiracy at play here. You just don't want to acknowledge the truth, so you attack the person who said it.

(20,709 posts)Like I said, it's obvious why Kristol doesn't want Bernie to be president. He can pretend all he wants that he's trying to stop Trump, but his entire career shows exactly why he's opposed to Bernie's progressive ideas.
He's not trying to stop Trump. He's trying to stop Bernie.

(25,471 posts)They're not mutually exclusive. If Sanders can't stop Trump, but Biden can and does, both would be true.

(47,468 posts)That is deflecting once again. He doesn't want Bernie to be the nominee, because he doesn't want Trump to win reelection. I'm sure he wouldn't care for Bernie as president, but he wouldn't care that much for Biden either. I suppose from a conservative's point of view, Biden would be the lesser of two evils.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
DanTex
(20,709 posts)His main priority, both now and for his entire life, has been to push right-wing policies and fight against anything progressive. I can't imagine why anyone thinks he's a good person for Dems to be listening to as to who to nominate for president.
Kristol in particular has been more wrong than almost anyone else in his prognostications, whether military or economic or political. Why would anyone listen to him about anything? Particularly since, whatever he claims, it's obvious that what he wants more than everything is to prevent Bernie from becoming president.
In short, Bill Kristol is a right-winger who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
So then defeating Donald Trump is wrong? Electing the best Democratic candidate to defeat Trump is wrong? That is what this discussion is about, NOT about Kristol's right-wing views. Nothing he said in his tweet represented his right-wing views, it was about nominating the best candidate to defeat the monster in the White House.
So if Kristol "doesn't have a clue what he's talking about", a large percentage of Democrats who think Biden is a better choice to defeat Trump don't know what they're talking about either. The problem with the attitude of so many of the purists is they would whittle the Democratic party down to a very small and ineffective party.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
DanTex
(20,709 posts)But:
A) I don't trust Kristol's forecasting ability, because he's been wrong so many times about so many things.
B) I don't trust that Kristol is being honest about why he wants people not to vote for Bernie, I think he's a right-winger who will say anything to forward his right-wing agenda.
A large percentage of Dems think Biden is the best choice to beat Trump. And a large percentage of Dems think Bernie is the best choice to beat Trump.
That's fine. But I don't see why anyone should listen to Bill Kristol.

(8,964 posts)Kristol is a old-school conservative, with a record of being wrong on so many issues but nevertheless aware of the threat that Trumpism poses to democracy. In place of conservatism, we have radical authoritarianism fronted by an dangerously irrational and corrupt con artist. Come November. this nemesis that must be soundly defeated, and if it takes the votes of disaffected Republicans who are aghast at what their party has become, that is fine by me. If and when conservatism is restored in the wake of the Trumpism disaster, we can do battle with them accordingly. For the time being, a coalition of unusual bedfellows that manages to get the job done come November should be seen as a positive thing.
