On Another Topic: Let's Get Rid of the Useless Early Primaries

This primary election cycle has proven one thing beyond a doubt: Holding the first two primary events in two, small, lily white states is just plain stupid.

Instead, let's pick four smaller states with populations that reflect the diversity of this country and hold actual primary elections in them on the same day in mid-February four years from now.

One state from the Northeastern Seaboard, One state from the South. One state from the Midwest, and one state from the Pacific region. Choose small states to make it possible for marginally funded candidates to participate fully. But, make sure each state has a diverse population. Like, say, Missouri, in the Midwest. Not Iowa.

Let's make states that reflect our nation's demographics go first in the primaries. No caucuses. Just primary elections with paper ballots.

What happened this year was a clown show in the early primaries. South Carolina was the only one of those states that made any sense at all. Two caucus states and New Hampshire do not reflect the electorate.

Four states on the same day and carefully selected to be representative. Then, let the candidates campaign in those states as they choose. As many candidates as want to participate. But, let's make it difficult for non-viable candidates to continue after those four states have weighed in.

That's my idea for our Democratic Primaries going forward. Let's not repeat the "Great Primary Fiasco of 2020"!

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

13. Illinois really is ideal. Big city, suburbs and exurbs, ethnic & class diversity, more....

A huge pro-Illinois reason is that Southern Illinois is Republican and the further south, the more Southern it gets. In terms of attitudes, it ranges from very liberal in large swathes of Chicago, to wealthy suburban, middle class suburban, major black and Latinx enclaves, tons of farms, small towns, industrial wastelands and big tech. Down Cairo way, it's basically Kentucky. And because of where the state is situated, and its length, it borders Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, and Kentucky. It's the ideal Democratic primary state.

10. The problem is that the DNC nor do the state parties decide primary dates.

State parties can only decide for caucuses.

Primaries are a state legislative issue.

...they can choose whether to recognize delegates from states that don't abide by established guidelines. Didn't they refuse to seat Michigan delegates back in 2008 because they held their primary earlier than than the DNC allowed them to?

I fully agree that we have no business holding the first Democratic Primary. I concede that it might make sense for the Republicans to leave the primary schedule as it stands, but NH should have nothing to do with charting the course for future Democratic nominations.

primary today, I would vote for:
