Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumThis morning's California primary update: Bernie's margin is down from 8.7% to 7.3%
There are still many many votes yet to be counted and reported, but so far, Bernie's share of the vote has increased by .1 percent (from 33.6% to 33.7%) , while Biden's has increased by 1.5 percent (from 24.9 to 26.4).
Further narrowing would not be surprising.

(42,862 posts)Wow. Wow! He needed a BLOWOUT in California (not just an expected "win'').
Moving California to Super-Tuesday certainly has had an effect on how things will be perceived going forward. There are no more BIG PRIZE states that could make-or-break or have any serious consequences on the inevitable outcome.
In spite of the "win" in California, this is still a completely HUMILIATING outcome for Bernie.

(14,891 posts)One of bernies battle cries in 2016 was that he was going to stay in through california because he would sweep the state and have enough delegates to contest the nomination.
He did stay in, and he didn't sweep the state and did not not have enough delegates to force a second vote.
That excuse is gone.
While I believe every state should be counted, in reality the outcome will be clear long before the last states vote. Of course, if they all fell 100% to bernie, it could change things. Just like the law of entropy, which says it's possible for every molecule in an object to move in the same direction at the same time, it just never happens.
My coffee cup just isn't going to jump into the air just because it's possible (although my beer bottles have moved sideways without help).

(1,315 posts)The votes left to be counted are all late main-in ballots (send in the last 2 days and on the day of election)
Those votes are breaking heavily for Biden.

(146,338 posts)fairly equally in the end, if this trend continues. Bernie Sanders was counting on a big win there, perhaps even with Biden getting almost no delegates at all. That did not happen. So, Sanders big chance to score in the state with the most delegates didn't occur.
He'll still get more delegates there than Biden, but not that many more, really. Biden will retain a delegate lead going into next Tuesday's primaries. Biden's lead will increase after Tuesday, and it will continue to increase as primaries are held.
This news from California has to be depressing to the Sanders camp.

(42,862 posts)Not many "big ticket" states remaining... and Florida is looking pretty BLEAK for Bernie. Based on current polling in Florida, it's possible that he may not even be viable. He could walk away with ZERO delegates if things continue to go in the same direction.
I'm sure that Bernie is fully aware that he has FAILED at this, his LAST shot, at being President. I expect that Jane is relieved and looking forward to returning to their cozy lakefront home in Vermont.

(3,256 posts)They are all late mail-in ballots or hand-delivered mail-in ballots on the day of the election.
Biden is winning >2/3d of them.
The eventual margin will be <4 or 5%
