Bernie Sanders needs his hotel rooms to be 60 degrees, close to the ice machine

but not too far from the elevator

After a long day on the road getting voters to feel the Bern, Bernie Sanders reportedly needs to chill out.

When traveling, the 78-year-old senator from Vermont has long deployed a list of "hotel dos and don'ts," according to a New York Times profile titled "The Bernie Sanders Personality Test."

To fall asleep more easily, Sanders asks for his hotel rooms to be set at 60 degrees Fahrenheit and, ideally, also include an oscillating fan.

Research from the National Institute of Health backs up Bernie's room regimen.

During the night, it's often quite cool. All winter, my house is set to 50 degrees (heat). I use very little oil (we heat with oil).

Of course, that's just me.

During the spring, at night, it is often cool in our house. In the summer it can get hot, but as you imagine - not often. And it does cool down most nights - even during some of the summer. It's not uncommon.

He's up in Burlington, so it's cooler up there. He might have AC in his home (I have no idea). But I'd bet most nights it's down in the 60's.

ETA: Burlington's hottest month is July and the temp range is just - 81 during the day and down to 60 at night.

So, yes. Most months it goes down to 60 at night

60 degrees is ridiculous - and this is speaking as a woman of a certain age (hot flashes, night sweats) who lives in FL. Despite my out-of-whack internal thermostat, I've never had my home AC below 75 and I'm perfectly comfortable.

60 degrees is nonsense - and really bad for AC systems. They freeze up.

Why Are You Always Hot?

Age

When you're older, your cooling system may not work as well. If it's hot outside, your heart needs to pump more blood to the surface to help keep your body cool. As you age, your heart just isn't as strong, so it has to work harder. To make things worse, your blood vessels may not widen like they used to, so you can't get as much blood to the skin's surface at once.

3. Medication side effects

Some prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications can cause excessive heat and sweating, including:

zinc supplements and other zinc-containing drugs
certain antidepressants, including desipramine (Norpramin) and nortriptyline (Pamelor)
hormonal medications (ie: Synthroid)
antibiotics
pain relievers
heart and blood pressure drugs

Keep in mind that some medications tend to only cause hotness or excessive sweating in a very small percentage of people, so it can be hard to verify whether another medication you take could be to blame.

To be sure, ask your healthcare provider if any medications you take could be the root of the issue.

1. Stress or anxiety

Feeling unusually hot and sweaty can be a sign that you’re experiencing anxiety or are under a lot of stress.

Your sympathetic nervous system plays a role in both how much you sweat and how you physically respond to emotional stress. If you experience moderate to severe social anxiety, for example, you may be familiar with these fight-or-flight physical reactions when you’re faced with a big crowd.

You may notice fast heart rate and breathing, increased body temperature, and sweating. These are all physical reactions that prepare you to move fast — whether it’s to outrun a predator or the co-worker you can’t stand.

Emotional symptoms of anxiety include panic, fear, and worry that can be difficult to control.

People would come, especially those from northern states, and crank down the AC into the 60s, and then call us in the middle of the night wondering why it was no longer working. Because you turned it into a big block of ice you nitwit. Air conditioners freeze below a certain temperature. Turn it to a minimum of 70, take off all your clothes, sleep with just a sheet, turn on a fan. Or else stay home where it’s 20°, open all your windows, and quit your bitching.

We have a family reunion last year, in early May, in New Smyrna Beach, FL (just south of Daytona Beach). We rented a condo in our usual place. The thermostat had a sign saying don't put it below 70 or it will freeze.

We had it no lower than 74... and it froze. It wasn't that hot, and we really didn't fuss with the thermostat. Suddenly it got very humid in the unit. A service person came, said it was frozen and they moved us to another unit for the last night.

60 is ridiculous. No one needs that.

I also carry a hand fan and a battery operated fan with me during the summer. It's not enough, sometimes. My kids were soccer players/track stars/band members. I've spent years sitting in bleachers cheering them on. Lots of times, I'd end up in the cafeteria/medical tent/my car cooling down while I missed part of their games/performances.

Jimmy Carter asked us to turn down our thermostats, why is it a problem when Bernie does just that?

This is about keeping an AC unit at 60 degrees. What are you talking about?

Hotels generally have combo heating/cooling units. What are *you* talking about? The NIH recommends 66 to sleep, I like 65, Bernie likes 60... it's a non-issue.

The first thing I do in a hotel is flip the ac on. I need it cold to sleep well. Many people run hot. I have my whole life.

This is what we’re picking apart now?

I’m guessing a somewhat slow news day.

He probably turns the bathroom light on to pee at night, too.

place. I like having a fan in the room, but don't demand one. I use the cool/heat system in my home maybe 10% max of the year, and I live in Florida.

...I'm a freak about noise.

But 60 degrees? I'm just the opposite, I need my room warm.

I went to Toronto a year ago (my annual trip) and stayed at the Marriott near the airport - $250 a night. It was FREEZING in the room. I was told the next morning the heating system was out. When was it going to be fixed? "About two weeks!" Checked out and moved to another hotel.

Toronto in September is very chilly at night.

Keeping a rom at 60 degrees constantly is very energy efficient. A politician who talks up something should have personal habits that reflect that he does what he expects others to do.

"to fall asleep more easily."

According to an NIH study, sleeping in a cooler room can help with sleep and metabolism — though the researchers settled on putting the thermostats at 66 degrees instead.

It's fascinating to see DU get its collective panties in a wad over Bernie's hotel room temps.

I think we need Bernie to release records of hotel thermostat temperature settings over the last 6 years (need to include the 2016 campaign also to prove a long-term disorder). Meanwhile we can get some HVAC experts to speculate on the cost of of both the temperature AND the fan settings. You cannot forget the fan settings!
