How much would Sanders spending plans cost?

BBC ‘Reality Check’

Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders is under pressure to explain how he would pay for his policy agenda, as his Democratic rivals say his sums don't add up.

Sanders has laid out a string of policies - including nationalised universal health care, cancelling student debt, and plans to tackle climate change.

This will cost an additional $40 trillion in government spending over the next decade, according to figures given on his website.

This would be the largest expansion of US government spending since World War Two, almost doubling the Congressional Budget Office's projected government spending over the next decade.

Present budget is about $4 trillion. That would DOUBLE the already huge federal budget. George II Mar 2020 #1

is also significantly under estimates by other people that have examined his proposals and their costs. I've read about some estimates going up to $60 trillion and that may be low depending how the new programs are utilized. I'm sure that there is some pent-up demand from people that have deferred procedures because of affordability, so simply adjusting the costs proportionally for the additional clientele admitted into those programs is inadequate.

Medicare for all might actually cost $50 Trillion over 10 years by itself. Imagine trying to get people to vote for the tax increases that would accompany that.

Sanders Medicare for All alone would cost around $30 trillion over a decade...this is a number Bernie himself has agreed with.

Cancelling student debt is fuzzier...was just reading some stuff about that a coupla nights ago and nobody knows how much it would cost exactly because there are several unknown factors. But I was surprised when I learned it really wasn't that much..."only" around $1.5 trillion (man, when did a trillion and a half become not that much?). The total cost to cancel student loans could be more or less than that but as I said even the experts can't say for sure.

Halting global warming will cost a TON of dough. I've seen estimates of $40 to $70 trillion just for that alone. That's what the entire world would have to chip in...but I imagine the American portion of that would be a decent-sized chunk since the US is a major contributor to climate change (2nd worst behind China).

And we haven't even talked about the much-needed upgrading of the US infrastructure...civil engineers estimate maybe $5 trillion give or take...and I'd bet that's too low.

Add all this shit up and we better get them Treasury printing presses oiled up real good because they're gonna be spewing out dollar bills 24/7 if we try to do all this stuff over the next decade.

primary today, I would vote for:
