Pete Buttigieg Is Fighting, and Winning, a Battle Over Religion With Mike Pence

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/pete-buttigieg-is-fighting-and-winning-a-battle-over-religion-with-mike-pence-821535/

The VP says he doesn’t discriminate against anyone. Millions of LGBTQ Americans aren’t likely to agree.

“I don’t have a problem with religion,” Buttigieg said. “I’m religious too. I have a problem with religion being used as a justification to harm people and especially in the LGBTQ community. So many people, even today, feel like they don’t belong.

You can get fired in so many parts of this country just for who you are, and that’s got to change. I’m not interested in feuding with the vice president, but if he wanted to clear this up he could come out today and say he’s changed his mind that it shouldn’t be legal to discriminate against anybody in this country for who they are. That’s all.”

As governor, Pence fought to prevent same-sex couples from obtaining equal parenting rights; supported a measure to ban same-sex marriage in the state; and signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allowed business owners to refuse service to potential LGBTQ customers.

His views have carried over into the White House. In January, Pence defended his wife’s decision to take a job teaching at a school that bars LGBTQ students and faculty, calling criticism of their affiliation with the school “deeply offensive.”

While it is critically important, he has so many thoughtful things to propose that reach a much wider populace, that I hope he doesn't become sidelined due to this "conversation" with pastor Pence.

The media seems to be drawn to the conflict like moths to the flame that incinerates good and smart candidates like Mayor Pete.

It is drawing attention to him and so far working for him. But I think he needs to pivot now to bring more issues to the forefront.

That isn't an accident, he's a media genius. Creating controversy is a PR technique. Controversy sells. Trump used this to great effect in 2016.

Pete gets it. It won't incinerate him, it will carry him higher.

He needs to navigate the tightrope to avoid being a one-issue "fringe" candidate - which he is not, but if the Media anoints him as such ---- not good.

Just start another controversy. He's got the college controversy going on too right now. He may come up with some more. He'll ride the media wave as long as he can, then around May, he'll start putting out policies, so he has something to talk about for the first debate.

Really really like him. Still not sure if he is ready for the"Big Time", coming from such a small pond despite his obvious smarts and wisdom.
