Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI spoke to my (80 yo) mother yesterday...she and her friends are intrigued by Pete Buttigieg...
Sort of like young people being intrigued last time by Bernie Sanders. Except that older Democrats are reliable voters.

(1,954 posts)Pete, for all of his accomplishments and intelligence, does have a highly meme-worthy set of characteristics. A gay man with a last name pronounced Butt-a-judge, with a husband named Chasten (Presumably pronounced "Chasin') Butt-a-judge? The memes will certainly roll.
Sure, it's sophomoric and utterly silly on its face, but that could -possibly- work against him. Then again, he could also get support for the same reason, so it's all kind of TBD and up in the air. The internet meme-factories are fickle with their content.
As an aside, if for whatever reason Pete decides to retire from politics and go into screenwriting, I'd pay to watch a movie or TV show about his life called "Chasin' Buttigieg". It could be a sort of buddy-comedy with his husband.

(1,954 posts)And the casual Internet memers didn't really hammer on Obama, only the right-wing elements played a large part in it. Once the Internet got ahold of "Biden memes", they realized that they could churn out some top quality OC with Obama and Biden both, and ran with it.
It's fascinating watching the meme machine work. With how unpredictable it is, for all I know, Pete and his husband's names may actually be a boon to them for the same reason. Yes, it's juvenile, but in the same way that Biden memes were juvenile, in an adorably endearing way.

(1,954 posts)I've never heard differently, but then again, the word doesn't come up in casual conversation all that often so I could have just been mispronouncing it my whole life. I thought the hard T was more of a British English thing.
ON EDIT: Yeah, I pronounce it like this. https://www.dictionary.com/browse/chasten

(1,954 posts)I'm not saying I'm right, but on several different dictionary/thesaurus sites, the word Chasten is pronounced both with a hard T and without it. I'm guessing it may be a regional thing?

(1,954 posts)I just did a bit of googling, so yes, Chasten (or at least Pete) the person does pronounce it with a T. Gotta love English, where identical words are pronounced differently.
