Related: About this forumMIA from Beto's campaign: Big policy ideas
PoliticoKamala Harris has her $315 billion proposal to raise teacher pay. Amy Klobuchar has a seven-point infrastructure investment plan. Elizabeth Warren is swimming in white papers on subjects ranging from tech company mergers to taxes and housing.
Beto ORourkes most distinctive policy position? To be determined. Theres no signature issue yet, no single policy proposal sparking his campaign. Convening crowds and listening to them is the central thrust of his early presidential bid. And one month into the race, even some of ORourkes supporters are starting to worry about persistent criticism that the charismatic Texan is missing big policy ideas of his own.
Many of your critics often believe that youre not clear or firm on your policy positions, a caucus-goer told ORourke at a town hall-style meeting in Iowa recently. What should we, as supporters and caucus-ers, say to rebut these claims?
Its not that ORourke doesnt have positions. He does, and in the month since announcing his presidential campaign, he has expressed many of them with specificity. He has robust ideas about immigration, including a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants. He has lauded the Green New Deal and called for a new Voting Rights Act. He was an early champion of legalizing marijuana and co-wrote a book about it. He wants universal pre-K education, and he has touted a bill by Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) to dramatically expand Medicare coverage while maintaining a role for private health insurance.

(38,958 posts)really have to disagree with your assessment. I find Yang to be lots of things, but Steve Forbes would not be one of them.

(81,859 posts)There is pretty much no difference between the idea of a flat tax and "The Freedom Dividend. Both ideas come from a couple of rich guys with no governing experience and no chance of happening.

(38,958 posts)I believe that Yang is vastly different from Forbes and the UBI is an excellent idea. AI & Automation are here and will be just increasing their impact on the job market and our way of life going forward. Yang has a well thought out platform on his web site covering a host of ideas well beyond just the Freedom Dividend if you happen to take a look.

(2,343 posts)I would take a parakeet who's only policy proposal was "more crackers" over what's in the white house now. I'm at the point where I don't care about policy or no policy, as long as someone with D next to their name wins.
