With 2020 race all but halted over coronavirus, Biden quietly widens lead over Trump: Reuters/Ipsos

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden has quietly expanded his lead over President Donald Trump among registered voters, even as the rapidly spreading coronavirus has all but sidelined the former vice president's campaign, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday.

The poll conducted on Monday and Tuesday of more than 1,100 American adults found that 46% of registered voters said they would support Biden if he were running against Trump in the Nov. 3 election, while 40% said they would vote for Trump.

That advantage of 6 percentage points was up from a 1-point lead for Biden recorded in a similar poll that ran from March 6 to 9.

The result suggested that Biden had not been hurt politically from his lack of visibility while the Republican president is at the center of a government response to a pandemic that has infected more than 184,000 people in the United States and killed more than 3,700 people.

Trump is going to get destroyed in the popular vote simply because NY and CA are going to come out in droves to vote against him, and that was before the virus.

The only states that truly matter are FLA, PENN, MI, OH, and WISC. Trump needs to win all of those states and retain his red states. Biden needs to win 4 of them and retain his blue states.

One thing we proved last time around is that national polls are worse than irrelevant. They are worse than irrelevant because they lull us into a false sense of security.

We don't have a national election. We have fifty state elections. As you note, the polls that would be informative are Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Because hope springs eternal, I would be curious to see polls from Texas.

National polling is a waste of money and misleading.

If the cheap thug Trump needs all five of those states, how is it Mr. Biden needs four of them?

I am not the sort to fool about with 'interactive' maps and such.

I would appreciate an explanation.

If he flips Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania and holds all the Hillary states, he reaches 270.

Normally, the big 4 electoral states, NY, CA, TX, and FLA, split between the Dem and Republican. That makes toss up states like OH, Penn., MI, and WISC important.

Biden could win with only three of those states, but that's too close for comfort. A better strategy would be to win 4 of the 5. A even better strategy would be to win all 5.
