By Suzette Hackney
Well, it's official. Finally.
Indiana's homegrown millennial wunderkind Pete Buttigieg is running for president. And while I don't anticipate a cakewalk campaign for him, Buttigieg certainly has captured the attention of political pundits, the media and Democrats hungry for a fresh, formidable candidate willing to make a real run at the White House.
Buttigieg's meteoric rise in popularity and in the polls has also caught the attention of the GOP. I won't say the party is running scared at least I won't say that yet. But if social media activity is any indication, Republican leaders are at a minimum bothered by Buttigieg.
Buttigieg is young, openly gay and confident that those traits will appeal to voters. He's an intelligent and affable guy, one whose attributes play well in this bitter political climate. His leadership style has repeatedly been described as visionary.
In other words, he could be a real political threat.

He's a flash in the pan, nothing more.

(612 posts)But I'm kind of amazed that you think he's merely "a flash in the pan, nothing more." If this is simply your opinion, that's acceptable. All of us are entitled to our opinions.
However, if you want to convince those of us who see impressively rising interest in Pete, and increasing support for his style of formulating, explaining and executing policies; dynamic growth in financial commitments, and his undeniable jump in multiple polls, what evidence do you have to draw such a conclusion?

(8,322 posts)Perhaps I missed them. (Several posts here have called that disqualifying.)
At any rate, and at risk of being accused of "slagging" ... this article gave me great pause about Mayor Pete, along with his lack of support for Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.
But more broadly, I simply don't think African American Democrats are going to vote for a gay white man whose only political experience is being a mayor. And they probably hold the key to this cycle's nomination, all things considered.
I appreciate your reasonable query.

(612 posts)Pete has not yet released his tax returns. He has said that he will, soon. Why does that sound so familiar? You may have noticed that another candidate took a very long time to release his tax returns, after promising over and over that he would release them "soon." Anyhow, after Pete stated his intention to release them, he added, "I need to practice what I preach."
Pete was interviewed by Rachel Maddow last night, and clearly stated ( once again ) that he does support Medicare for All, followed by an explanation of his policy to implement it.
In regard to the Green New Deal, he has expressed repeatedly that our very security depends on aggressively utilizing every form of green energy, and to end our reliance on fossil fuels. In addition, he has stated that he -- and his generation -- are highly motivated to attack this problem now, because they will actually live with the consequences.
Finally, your speculation about Pete's acceptability to the African American Community is yet to be determined. I don't disagree that he probably starts out with a deficit among African Americans. But as they get to know him and learn to understand him, they may -- or may not -- decide to entrust him with the presidency. I don't think we can know this at this very early stage in the electoral process.
I don't think you have been following Pete as carefully as I have, and some of your assumptions are based on a lack of information. I don't blame you for that. Each of us tends to pay close attention to our chosen candidates, and we often hear under-developed or inaccurate information about other candidates.
I wish you and Bernie the best, and I would appreciate it if you don't dismiss Pete Buttigieg so quickly. Please give him a chance. I can assure you that if Bernie is the Democratic nominee, I will contribute to him, support him and vote for him enthusiastically. I would hope you could draw the same conclusion about Pete. -- Thanks -- Dave

Buttigieg has said he believes the country should move in the direction of a Medicare for All system, but that private health insurance companies shouldnt be eliminated.
In a CNN town hall earlier this month, Buttigieg endorsed what he called Medicare for all who want it, in which a Medicare-type public option would be made available and you invite people to buy into it.

Buttigeig's response here seems to lack an understanding of HR676, the original legislation propsed by John Conyers, and Bernie Sanders' bill announced this week.
As with its previous iterations, Sanders' latest bill would establish a national, single-payer Medicare system with vastly expanded benefits. Sanders' plan would also prohibit private plans from competing with Medicare and would eliminate cost-sharing.
What Mayor Pete seems to be suggesting is the watered-down "Medicare for Americare" proposal. (I refer to it as "watered-down" because its purpose seems to be to protect insurance companies and their continuing operations, i.e. making a profit off of Americans illnesses, which I deem to be unacceptable.)
But many of the candidates even official "Medicare-for-all" co-sponsors are at the same time edging toward a more incremental approach, called "Medicare for America." ...
This movement to embrace a more incremental policy comes as politicians tread carefully over the political land mines a "Medicare-for-all" endorsement could unleash, while seeking to capitalize on voters' growing appetite for health overhaul.
During the 2018 midterm election campaigns, some congressional candidates talked about allowing younger people anyone older than 55 to join Medicare or allowing people younger than 65 to buy into it if they choose (what's come to be called the public option). Many candidates aren't eager to face the industry opposition a full-on Medicare expansion would surely trigger.
Looked on his website for clarification. Couldn't find issues or policies of any kind.

I may or may not have been following Mayor Pete as closely as you. There's no way of comparing or knowing. But I can say with certainty that I don't agree that my opinions -- they aren't assumptions; that's your word, not mine -- of Mayor Pete are based on a lack of information.
YMMV.
