How The Russian Social Media Effort Boosted Bernie

below article from 2018

The allegations are laid out in a recent charges by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The 37-page indictment handed down last month includes dozens of allegations that Russians stole Americans' identities and created fake Facebook and Twitter accounts that worked as internet trolls designed to sow discord in the campaign.

And part of the effort was designed to assist Sanders, the special counsel said.

The indictment quotes a specific order given to the covert campaign to "use any opportunity to criticize Hillary and the rest (except Sanders and Trump — we support them)."

Sanders, a potential leading contender in the 2020 presidential contest, has tried to minimize the Russian meddling on his behalf.

The two-front cyber war included hacks and leaks of Democratic Party emails, including those by John Podesta, Clinton's campaign chairman.

like hiring as his National Press Secretary in 2020 a former editor of The Intercept (of all places) who publicly announced her support for Jill Stein in 2016.

And he could have done more to stop the Hillary hate that was swirling around his campaign, IMO. For one thing, he could have conceded months before the convention, rather than allowing thousands of his supporters to protest there, hoping against hope they could get enough delegates to change their minds.

and they saw what they were posting. and they saw how many of their followers were useful idiots.

if he was really a leader, he would have faced it head on.
if he was the one to pick up the pieces at this point in history, he would have at least tried to solve this.

Sanders' choice of staffers and their 2016 histories make the howls about replaying the last campaign a very weak stance.

I still stand by my support of Bernie in the 2016 election. I think his stances aligned by my stances a lot more than Hillary's did. Tax the rich, Medicare for all, free public college, etc.

But the Russians absolutely capitalized the divide and drove as much of a wedge between Hillary and Bernie supporters as possible. Right now we need to start healing our party, realize who put the wedge there and become mobilized to beat Trump.

all on our own.

After Warren's speech about who built the roads, who educated the workers, I listened to mainstream media to see her interviews. I got to know Bernie by his trying to get her to run. They did several interviews on issues they were working on in congress together. I started to really like him. I thought he pushed just that much further and wouldn't it be great if he ran. But this country isn't ready for him. Warren never would run and then he jumped in, to keep those issues. I didn't believe he could win, but I sure hoped he would.

I don't twitter, instagram, snapchat or pintrist. Now, I am barely on FB. But all those FB friends of Bernie I made and have remained active. I saw the skinniest snowman ever made from one guy's kid in Austin. I cried when another found her birth family after years of trying to find them. I have friends of friends now in Denver because of another one. NONE of them folded up tent.

Most of the time we expected this kind of trolling from Koch or Mercer funding and the big revelation of 2016 was that Russia was at he heart of it, but that doesn't mean it won't continue from within the US.

False, shaded, or even true info framed divisively will happen. Its always happened, but social media is the superhighway of influence.

Remember, the Russians mostly exploited existing divisions -- not create new ones out of thin air.

30. Russian interference sought to boost Bernie Sanders in 2016, Mueller report says
Sun Apr 21, 2019, 04:46 PM
Apr 2019

Russia really did its best to help sanders

The report provides a fresh look at allegations that the Russian-based Internet Research Agency not only interfered in the 2016 campaign on social media on behalf of Donald Trump but also to help Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Internal IRA documents “referred to support for the Trump campaign and opposition to candidate Clinton,” according to the report. While much of this section of the report is redacted, it cites directions to IRA operators not to harm Sanders.

“Main idea: Use any opportunity to criticize Hillary [Clinton] and the rest (except Sanders and Trump — we support them),” quotes the report.....

While Sanders had said in a previous radio interview that one of his campaign workers figured out what was going on and alerted Clinton campaign officials, his 2016 campaign manager Jeff Weaver told The Post in a recent interview for the story that Sanders “misspoke a little bit and conflated a few of the facts. .?.?. He did not know, I did not know, none of us knew” that Russia was behind the efforts.

i not only saw the trolls, i saw what they posted, how many useful idiots jumped on the bandwagon. and even how many of them split off from du because of how ugly it got.

you might want to walk that path again, but i dont. we best get ready, cuz there's gonna be some serious push.

'Bernie Bros' tweeted at Hillary supporters that she was a 'lying ****-bag' and in supporting her their 'vaginas are making terrible choices.' They harassed supporters at rallies, and unleashed special fury at female reporters. Sarah Jeong of Vice had to shut down her Twitter account after being flooded with sexist attacks, simply because she had asked Sanders supporters to tone down their rhetoric. Janell Ross of The Washington Post was inundated with 'a variety of curse words and insults typically reserved for women. More than one has suggested that I deserve to become the victim of a sex crime.'

"Sanders himself, probably not wishing to alienate his fiercest supporters, was uncharacteristically mild in his response to the increasingly violent, misogynistic outbursts. 'Senator Sanders is committed to running a positive campaign on the issues, and we encourage all his supporters to stick to that same message,' Hector Sigala, Sanders's digital media director, told Mashable. ... Bernie pretty much let his 'Bros' do whatever they wanted. He claimed that he couldn't -- and shouldn't -- try to control what his supporters thought, but that, of course, was disingenuous nonsense. He knew he had tremendous influence, particularly with his younger fans, and exploited it throughout his campaign. But he never criticized the misogyny in their attacks on Clinton."

attacking Hillary Clinton."

Too bad they didn't take their concerns to the Clinton campaign or to the FBI.

(Finally, in September a Bernie campaign volunteer, acting on his own, told someone connected with a Clinton super-pac about the strange activity, but the word didn't get to Hillary because the super-pac wasn't allowed to contact her.)

Making of the President ... 1960
Humphrey supporters not thrilled with Kennedy
Kennedy people HATED LBJ

1968 ... Kennedy, Eugene McCarty, Humphrey ... need I say more?

1980 ... Kennedy hated Carter

1992 Jerry brown hated Clinton and started the entire anti-Clinton campaign that lasts through this day
2000 gore and Bradley
2008 Clinton and Obama

Sometimes you need a healthy debate. This year we have some great debaters, and I don’t see grudge matches amongst the candidates ... amongst the voters, maybe, but not the candidates

I think our display of riches in the debates will put the Repugs to shame.

I'm hoping very much that Sanders' role will be at most a forgettable answer to a quiz question in freshman American history a decade from now.
