How much does "demographics" influence your choice of candidate?

I've seen some disdain expressed for "white old men" here at the DU in reference to Biden and Sanders.

It makes me wonder how much demographics is a factor for DUers. Let's try this scenario: Candidate A is an older white male and you like candidate A's proposals slightly more than candidate B's, but candidate B is a woman or candidate B is sure to do better in attracting African American or Hispanic voters. Do you go with candidate B for demographics reasons?

I realize in some cases DUers couldn't be happier with campaign policies put forward by Elizabeth Warren or Kamala Harris, for example, and they feel there's no need for them to look elsewhere for qualities in other candidates. That's fine. I'm just curious about those who are torn between two or more options. How much does gender/ethnicity/age play a role in your decision-making?

I think we need to back younger candidates who will be around for awhile, and who will be able to stand up to the incredible pressures, physical and psychological, the office of the Presidency presents.

When I think of demographics, I think more about the browning of America, brown people in terms of population increase, and how brown people are now moving into formerly white areas. We need to consider these things when nominating and voting for candidates.

The demographics considerations should be applied more to the voters than the candidates. Who are they, where do they live, how many of them are here, will they vote Democratic? Other than age, for practical reasons, I don't care what else the Democratic hopeful candidates are, ethnically, or in terms of gender.

One of many reasons I'd like to put Kamala Devi Harris in the white house is because many people still associate the Indian ethnicity with job stealing H-1b visas and refuse to believe I'm a US citizen, let alone be trusted with security clearances. It would be nice to elect a Desi president.

the "shallow read" stage. With as many candidates as we have - it's inevitable that the first news i get from them might be their demographics as you put it, and place my initial response on that (except for those candidates I already have opinions on). That said, I wouldn't want to stop with my shallow read and look over their policies and a speech or two.

our party professes to, and indeed does represent (historically and currently) women and POC. I believe we can only be credible and truly representative by having both on our ticket. And youth, too - the times they are a'changin' and so fast...important for young people to have a voice at the top!

Great question!
