Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI think Mayor Pete, Sanders, & Biden are all going to drop in the polls as time goes on.
No big deal to me if I'm wrong. I'll wholeheartedly support whoever wins because I like all three of them as well as almost all of the rest of the 2020 pool. I don't like Gilibrand, but I'll be 100% behind her if she wins the nomination. Okay enough for my disclaimer, lol.
Anyway, I think one of the main reasons why Mayor Pete and Bernie Sanders are polling so much higher at this time than some of the other announced candidates is because the television media and so many talk shows have awarded them with most of their air time and most of their hype so far. I also think the media is the reason why Biden is polling so high even though he hasn't even announced yet. Most of what we have been hearing so far from the TV media is Bernie, Mayor Pete, and Biden Biden Biden.
Sure, Bernie has been one of the most progressive voices out there, but as the primaries move along, I think his routine is going to become a little stale. I think the Democratic voters will eventually choose someone who grabs us with a fresh new voice, as long as that person is just as tough on Trump as Bernie has been.
Mayor Pete is incredibly intelligent and kind. He impresses the heck out of me whenever he speaks, but I have to wonder if he might come off as being so much of a scholastic that his words could go right over the tops of the heads of all those people who aren't very cerebral, and that's about half of American voters nowadays. Also, he is so kind that I think that some voters might feel that he won't match up well, one on one, with the big bad bully in a general election.
Joe Biden? I have always loved Joe, but I think the people who are most interested in voting in the Democratic Primary are people who are looking for someone who hasn't been so embedded in Washington politics for as long as Joe Biden has.
I very much like what all three of those folks have to say, but I just think some of the other candidates are going to start polling much higher once the media gives them the same fair amount of attention as what they have been giving to Bernie Sanders, Mayor Pete, and Joe Biden over the last couple of months. It already seems to me that the media is trying to pick the candidates for us again. I would rather that every Democratic candidate gets equal time so we can give them all the equal consideration they deserve.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

(81,869 posts)The others haven't, especially Beto. This was Trump's strategy and it worked in 2016. So far it's working for Buttigieg as well. We may be having a conversation a year from now lamenting that XYZ "better" candidate didn't win and that Pete unfairly got more air time. And the answer will be that he showed up and others didn't.

(10,575 posts)I think the way he's rolling out policy will keep him at the top longer too. Rather than dump it all he has an actual communication plan around revealing his policy statements. Imagine that, a democrat using marketing in their policy strategy... it's about time.

(115,816 posts)He comes across as an angry old man yelling at the millionaires and billionaires to get off his lawn. Since Elizabeth Warren offers much the same message but with more specifics, more warmth and less shouting, she might pick up some of the numbers he loses. I think Biden will do well. Trump was the anti-establishment candidate who wanted to burn it all down, and that's what he's done, but he also brought chaos, disruption, incivility and general awfulness. Biden's years of experience, as well as his warm demeanor and obvious decency, might offer a much-needed sense of stability and all-around goodness which could attract a lot of voters. I'm not sure about Buttigieg. I like him a lot, but he might eventually be hurt by his relative youth and lack of experience. He will have to be able to make up for that in other ways, without being too wonky.

(14,565 posts)Democrats love to overreact to whatever is in the news. It has always fascinated me because I assumed it would be the other way.
Kamala Harris jumped in early and was the darling. There were assertions here that it was inevitable. Now I don't see those posters, other than some of them have switched to Pete because now he is gobbling up the airtime and attention. I guess now he is inevitable.
I'm just going to stick to a wide scope view that we're not going to nominate someone in his 70s, we're not going to nominate a gay man in 2019, and we're not going to surrender several percent margin for error by nominating a female from a coastal liberal state.

(24,122 posts)I could see Kamala making a come back though, given her last townhall performance and the policy positions she's taken that align more and more with Bernie's. IMHO, Pete is going to have to start getting more specific regarding where he stands on certain issues to remain competitive, but, I like what I've heard so far.

(24,122 posts)and Mayor Pete, he's too fresh a face to know for sure, though I see him going up with Bernie... and Elizabeth as well. It's those three, Bernie, Pete & Elizabeth, who will be there at the end, probably along with Kamala.
