Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhy not Warren? She runs rings around Bernie Sanders.
Of the Town Halls I've seen so far, I think I've been most impressed by Elizabeth Warren. Her sunny, positive, earnest, and caring personality is matched by nuanced thinking and a firm grasp on numerical and legislative details. Her views are just as progressive as Bernies (while being stronger in gun control) -- but her agile thinking and ability to get along with others makes her more likely to accomplish her goals. What has Bernie ever accomplished that was as substantial as the Consumer Protection agency?

The most progressive wing of the Democratic Party is represented by two candidates: One is younger than President Trump, cheerful, doesnt have the socialist label and has a zillion policy ideas. The other is five years older than Trump, prickly and humorless, has the socialist label and embraces the most extreme positions many in his party reject (e.g. allowing incarcerated mass murderers to vote). So far to my ongoing amazement Democratic primary voters tell pollsters they want the grouchy socialist, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), not Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), the cheerful policy wonk who declares shes a capitalist, albeit one who recognizes that the system is rigged."
We should remember that early polling might simply reflect Sanderss name recognition, but nevertheless, it is not as if Warren is an unknown quantity. By virtually any measure, shes a more accomplished and more electable choice, yet its Sanders who remains in the top tier of candidates. As Warren showed Monday night at a CNN town hall, shes obviously the candidate with the most detailed, specific policies and the one most capable of explaining detailed plans. She also manages to be less frightening but bolder than Sanders.
As to boldness, Sanders swore off pushing impeachment hearings now. Warren gave this impassioned plea:
SNIP
Whatever you think of impeachment, thats as good an answer as a candidate can give to a Democratic audience. It helps, of course, that she has actually read the whole thing (if youve actually read the Mueller report, its all laid out there. Its not like its going to take a long time to figure this out. Its there. Its got the footnotes. Its got the points. It connects directly to the law). With specifics she is able to make her case quite compelling: He told the White House counsel to go fire Mueller, and then told the White House counsel to go lie about having told the White House counsel to go fire Mueller, and then told the White House counsel to write a letter saying that Donald Trump had not told him to go fire Mueller, and then to say, Why on Earth would you take notes about what I said to you? The lawyers I deal with never put anything in writing. When she puts it that way, its hard to see how Sanders or other more cautious Democrats will explain their reticence.
Specificity is an asset in the policy realm as well. Warren has a fleshed-out plan and has a way to pay for it. What we have to do as a country is roll back that debt. And so, I have two parts to the proposal, she said. Part one is that we say that were going to roll back student loan debt for about 95 percent of students who have debt. She continued, "And part two is to make sure that we never get in this mess again on student loan debt and that is to make college universally available with free tuition and fees, and to put more money into Pell grants so that students of color, so that our poorest students have real access to college and that we put real money into our historically black colleges and universities. " Shes explicit about how to pay for it, without demonizing the rich:

(115,829 posts)I agree with her 100% (yes, I know she's a running dog lackey of capitalist imperialism, a bourgeois traitor to the proletariat, and a counterrevolutionary reactionary industrialist, so we can get that out of the way). Warren doesn't yell; she explains. We don't need Bernie because we have her.

She's not. But even if it doesn't it mean she's wrong it does bring her motives into question. At the very least.

(25,598 posts)Variation of a conversation seen many times on Twitter:
A: I want candidates who can fix things, not ones who want to "blow up the system."
B: Oh, so you're defending the status quo. You want to preserve Citizens United? The filibuster? Voter restrictions? Mass incarceration? The for-profit health insurance industry? It's all about policy. I would never consider anyone who isn't for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and a wealth tax.
A: My candidate has spoken extensively about universal health care, climate change and income inequality. You know, none of Bernie's ideas are new or unique to him. Infrastructure, climate change and health care were very important to President Obama, just for starters. Why did Bernie supporters swear they'd vote for Elizabeth Warren if she ran in 2016 but now that she is they're saying she's too much like Hillary Clinton? Did her positions change between then and now?
B: (Personal insult implying A is an idiot and Democrats are centrist Wall St. puppets, etc.)

Castro (although I like him in general)
Gravel
Delaney

Inslee (although also like him)
Williamson
Ryan
Moulton
Hickenlooper
Weld
Swalwell (I love him but he's not ready IMHO)
Sanders (Sorry just not a fan)
Biden (Love him but time for him to be a Party Elder)
BUT I would take any of them before Donald Trump and I would be sure I voted.
Current Fav List
1. Buttigieg
2. Harris/ Warren (Warren is underestimated and I'm hopeful she'll break through)
3. Booker/O'Rourke
4. Klobuchar/ Gillibrand

(37,648 posts)She's impressive. She did great at CNN's town hall.
But it's not about knowledge of details or detailed plans. Leadership is about charisma and force of personality and having that ability to get people to follow you. A good leader chooses people to draft plans with details. Leaders don't need to, and can't, be people who hold all the details of a variety of plans and issues in their heads. Those things are farmed out to specialists, who craft plans to comport with the leaders broad design.
People react to the person more than the plans, I think.
I'd vote for her for President, for sure. But she wouldn't be my first choice.
One thing I look for is rashness in decision. She was the first one to say "impeach" after the Mueller Report. I thought that was rash, given that Congress hadn't even gotten the unredacted version yet, or seen the evidence on which the report relied. At least some thought should go into such a heavy decision, not to mention consensus of the Democratic leaders, hashed out at a table in at least one lengthy meeting. But she's not made that way. (She also joined the bandwagon to oust Franken, another hasty decision, IMO. Although she wasn't among the first, I'll give her that.)
There are just so many people running that it's easy to get lost in the crowd. She may distinguish herself at the debates, though. I'm waiting for the debates.

(14,565 posts)I'm not going to make it more complicated than that. Trump would bait her easily and often, while abusing the ready-made nickname. Warren doesn't have any comprehension of big picture calm as opposed to overreacting to the most recent development or issue. That is 100% the opposite of what I am looking for, regardless of whether I agree with her positions.
They used to say whenever you saw a lake in a Burt Reynolds movie you knew a car would go into it. These days whenever there's a high profile political development the absolute guarantee is that Elizabeth Warren will speak up quickly with some far left position designed to impress and motivate the base.
That would be absolutely wonderful if our base comprised 60% of the electorate, and we weren't facing an incumbent in 2020.
