Passing the ERA, lets start there. Thats what Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said in response to a question last weekend about what shed do for women in her first 100 days in the White House.
Harris was speaking at a live podcast taping in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the last in a packed weekend of events. About 200 people turned out to see Harris in conversation with three young progressive activists, a conversation that covered her positions on the War on Drugs and climate change, and the historic nature of her candidacy.
Then it came time for Q & A and an audience member stood and asked Harris what her plan was for protecting womens rights. Harriss answerin addition to securing reproductive rights, introducing universal pre-K, and a national policy for affordable childcarewas to pass, at long last, the Equal Rights Amendment...
Harris framed passing the ERA as a question of economic justice: When you lift up the economic status of women, you lift up the economic status of children and of families and of neighborhoods and of communities, and all of society benefits, she said. The first step to lifting womens economic status, Harris said, is passing the ERA. Starting there, she seemed to say, would make it easier to address what is still very concrete and significant and clear disparities around wages. In fact, an ERA would federally guarantee equal pay, making it easier to close the American wage gap, which is 23 percent for white women, and a whopping 39 percent and 47 percent for Black and Latina women, respectively.

(27,813 posts)I like her, I just want to see what everyone has to say before I make a choice (and I know some candidates will get weeded out by natural selection).
In 1992 the Democrats had a large, strong field of primary challengers. Bill Clinton was hardly my first choice, but he won me over as the primary season progressed, and even though I did not agree with some of what he did, he was the best president in my lifetime as far as my economic life getting significantly better. I learned to like his collegiate attitude and his sense of humor, and how you couldn't fluster him. I see some of that with Kamala Harris, and here she's landed on something that is very dear to my heart. I'm glad the ERA is back in the national dialogue (thanks to the cipher of a state that is Virginia).

(2,598 posts)Senator Harris is currently serving in the SENATE. What is she doing as a Senator to pass the ERA? Is she a cosponsor of S. J. Res 6, which would extend the deadline to ratify the ERA? Ben Cardin introduced the legislation, and it has three cosponsors. Senator Harris is not one of them. So, we are to believe that she will work toward something as President, but she won't lift a finger to do it now.

(731 posts)Especially with one candidate already drawing most of the "promise them anything" vote.
We'd need 2/3s of both Houses to pass the ERA.
Kamala Harris has made a number of policy declarations that she's had to walk back in recent days.
She runs stronger as a realist than some sort of populist IMO. Be authentic.

'Realist' in politics usually means preserving the status quo. I'm left to wonder about candidates who can't see a political pathway to passage and ratification of this important and overdue right for women.
That's not 'realism,' it's indifference. This is a matter of priorities and interests. Either they believe it's central to the nation's economic well-being, and a matter of basic fairness and equity and intend to act precipitously, or they're settling for the status quo where legislators can't find the leadership to make it a major priority.
Kamala Harris promises to make it a major part of her economic agenda as president. Let's see what the others have to offer.

(731 posts)There is only a small portion of the electorate who go for pie-in-the-sky and there's heavy competition for that segment already.
Kamala Harris prevails only by drawing support from critical thinkers. Promising BS that can't be delivered will not help her win with Democrats in my estimation.
She has too much going for her to serially over-reach. It hurts her.
And I'd like to see her do very well.

(85,996 posts)...I don't believe you understand Kamala Harris or who she's going to 'draw support from.'
Labeling prioritizing the passage of the ERA as 'overreach' sounds like you don't expect your candidate to get anywhere near the effort.
Good luck with that.
(...btw, I invented 'good luck with that' in this forum, so... good luck with that!)

(731 posts)that you can not fathomablely pass, then you come off as an unserious person.
Better to focus on realizable goals, while never giving up our support for the ERA?
Tilting at windmills is not going to attract the adults in the party. And Harris has huge potential with the non-populist majority of the party.
Undeliverable promises are a turn-off to people like me. Kamala can do better than this.

I like Kamals Harris. She's in a tight race for 2nd place with me. The walk-backs this week and this undeliverable promise do not help her.
She can do better.

(731 posts)As a party, we should support the ERA until we get it passed.
But promising it as a 100-day priority item when it is an impossible thing to deliver alienates reality-based voters.
