modelled on SanFrancisco’s program.

South Bend to launch municipal ID card system

Whether you’re documented, undocumented, homeless, or otherwise, you’ll be able to get an ID card in South Bend.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg joined La Casa de Amistad and others Thursday to launch the “SB ID Program (South Bend Community Resident Card Program).”

The SB ID program is designed for populations whose residents have difficulty obtaining the usual forms of photo identification. It can be used to help pick kids up from school, get prescriptions, and order transcripts from a college or university.

SF Global of Oakland, CA will partner with La Casa de Amistad to handle the verification for the ID cards. The cards themselves will feature the new South Bend flag, your picture, your address, and your organ donor status.

South Bend’s police do not cooperate with ICE. To all intents and purposes South Bend is a sanctuary city.

Clearly it helps the city to better understand its population, and it helps previously unrecognized people with the credentials they need to navigate the system. Very simple idea, but profoundly important. Excellent move, Pete!

And we need even more of this.....we decent rational sympathetic folks outnumber the far right Crazy Trumpster types and their Neo Nazi compadres.....people lacking any trace of empathy.

And we need to vote in every election we can, National, Statewide, Local, School Boards, it all matters.

... during my university days, and I don't remember there being many foreign immigrants in those days. There were foreign students and professors at Notre Dame U. and Saint Mary's College but they had student visas and college ID. I'm guessing that a lot has changed since the late 60s/early 70s to the point that a Community Resident Card would be necessary to aid immigrants without ID. It's a great solution for residents who need to show ID but cannot prove their citizenship in one way or another.
