Universal basic income, robots, and Yang

Andrew Yang is worried about robot bartenders, self-driving freight trucks, and “worship of the almighty dollar.”

With the field of Democratic presidential candidates nearing two dozen people, the New York entrepreneur is attempting to set himself apart with a decidedly different platform: one that focuses on apprehensions about tech automation and an economic overhaul usually dismissed as a conversation starter rather than a viable policy platform. More specifically, Yang is championing a universal basic income for every adult American, which he believes is an economic necessity for the continuation of capitalism in the face of expanding job loss due to automation.

Yang visited Las Vegas as part of his 2020 presidential campaign. He started with a well-attended town hall at Springs Preserve on Tuesday and followed with a roundtable discussion at Veterans Village and a meet and greet with SEIU members on Wednesday.

Yang’s universal basic income plan would provide $1,000 monthly to every U.S. citizen 18 and older. Sometimes referred to as a “freedom dividend,” universal basic income would be funded through a value added tax.

1. how much would a universal basic income be?

If he's thinking $300, $500, that's no good. Anything less than $1200/mo is a joke. Even that would be a pittance. A universal basic income in this country would never be legislated. I can't see it happening any time soon.

A look at his webpage will explain the details. It’s not enough to get rich on, but will help as we transition to a different looking economy.

It would be a minimal existence, but it might be enough to get the homeless off of the streets if they find someone to share the rent with. It certainly isn't enough to provide for someone to live independently.

It would certainly provide a cushion while finding a job
This isn't a new idea in American politics. Richard Nixon considered it back about 1970, as a way for people to stay above the poverty line

incoming tsunami. The technology to displace tens of millions of jobs is essentially developed, and more is being implemented literally every day.

Finland's current conservative government canceled its two-year experiment in a basic income. For various reasons it didn't encourage more people to prepare for new jobs, even though payments continued even if employed. So it's a project in progress and a shame it was canceled, but those involved were notably happier with the security even a very modest guaranteed income provided.

I think that kind of reassurance of security would do a lot all by itself for our nation.

From what I understand a VAT would increase prices by quite a bit. He said that there are ways around this and to make it less harmful somehow, so, I will pass on this for now.

But he said if you were to accept this $1,000/mo, you would have to forego other benefits. He particularly mentioned that it was not "additive" to Social Security, which means that -- for the elderly -- if they are making more than $1,000/mo in Social Security, it would make no sense to "opt-in' for this "Freedom Dividend" because they would be getting less benefits overall since it doesn't stack with Social Security. Factor in that they will be paying more for most everything due to VAT, and I don't see how they go for it once they dig into the details.

bottom much more than already exist. Eventually we will be pushed to decide who can have babies, there will surely be those that argue that people getting UBI should not have babies, instead people that don't need UBI should become parents. The above may sound wrong to some, but human nature can be vicious and that viciousness displays itself in horrid ways.
