Can you point me to the perfect Democratic candidate?

The one that has never made a mistake? The one that has never needed to grow professionally ir personally throughout the years? The one whose past us so squeaky clean that we would all want to be this person?

What are we looking for as a society in these days? It seems we are too focused in finding the past flaws of people and trying to right all the social and economic wrongs of the past with out choice, and that's simply not the way life works. Our candidates will all be imperfect and should represent the progress we can have today, not the panacea of a distant future. Clinton was a philanderer and Obama used drugs in his youth. Still, they represented a step foward in our progress as a nation.

We got some progress and then we got W and Trump. Several steps backwards, but that's life right there. Don't expect ideological purity, perfection or incredible feats from the women and men running for the Dem nomination. They are all good, flawed people with their hearts in the right place, and they all want to get us out of the moral and spiritual shithole Trump got us into.

A black man was president. A woman is closer than ever to being so. An openly gay man is a top contender. There is an Asian-American in the mix as well. Progressive issues like universal health care and free college are on the table. Our representatives and senators reflectvthe diversity of America. We are on the right track, folks. Let's focus on our strengths, on developing and enhancing them... and let the best candidate win!

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Obama was the best candidate in my lifetime and turned some big negatives (Rev Wright) into positives (his speech on race).

Stance on a big issue is valid, I think. But they're all Democrats (well...one may be questionable, but close), so they all support the Democratic Party Platform, generally.

None of them is going to want to end Social Security or Medicare, raise taxes on the rich, end unions, enact tariffs that cause product prices to skyrocket and hurt American businesses, insist that climate change is a hoax, think it's okay to drill for oil in our National Parks, cage children, and all the rest of the Republican practices.

#1 for me is who can beat Trump. I don't know what will happen if we don't.

All choices at this level are compromises.
Just look at how far the Evangelicals went in compromising their religious beliefs to vote for Trump.
Basically they threw Jesus under the bus, and then had the bus back over him again.

Kidding, of course.

No candidate is perfect. The important thing is whether they admit to mistakes and sincerely vow to do better. I think that can be said of most of our candidates.

They make their cases and we balance what we like vs what we don't. Not everyone agrees on what is most useful in our evaluations.
I see candidate selection as a subjective exercise. We each decide what is forgivable and what isn't and weigh the importance of various elements according to our personal values.
I don't buy into all assumptions and authoritarian claims. To each their own. Discussions of flaws and strengths without animosity are possible. And, I see no benefit to assigning motives or claiming superior knowledge.

Thank you for a great post.

I try to stay above the fray, but fail miserably whenever I see attacks on candidates I hold in esteem — which is frankly most of them. I especially can’t seem to let incendiary or divisive attacks on a particular candidate that appear based in a biased perspective alone; just gotta call them on that.

Nearly all of them supported the death penalty, which I am deeply against. Really wish candidates would have the courage to say "I oppose the death penalty in ALL instances" but the fact that most of them applaud Gov. Gavin Newsom's moratorium is heartening to me.
