Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator who became one of Sen. Bernie Sanders's most passionate surrogates, confirmed Sunday night that she has been offered a spot on the Green Party's 2016 ticket. She has not decided whether to accept it.

"It's true," Turner said when asked whether presumptive Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein had asked her to become her running mate. "Talking with my family. There's nothing to tell at this point."

It wasn’t the most enthusiastic defense of Cohen, but worth pointing out since Turner is a Democrat and a Bernie Sanders ally. Host Jake Tapper asked her about what she thought about the FBI’s raid on Cohen last Monday. She said it concerned her a “little” and it remained to be seen if there were any abuses, but, she added, “certainly, throughout the history of this country, especially where it comes to African-American folks, I mean, Black Panthers, Dr. King, Malcolm X, and other civil rights freedom fighters. You can see that sometimes the government can go too far in its effort and be skewed one way.”

Again, it wasn’t exactly a defense of Cohen, but for Turner, that was beside the point.

Tue Apr 30, 2019, 02:25 AM
Apr 2019

Civil rights activist and former Ohio state senator Nina Turner said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union that Americans should have “some concern” about how the FBI is running its probe into Trump lawyer Michael Cohen.

In late 2017[21] and again in April 2018, a Twitter user @Jamie_maz[22] reproduced posts written between 2007 and 2009 on Reid's former blog "Reid Report" which, as The Nation described it, "us[ed] the trope of gay sex to mock politicians and journalists."[23] Following criticism, Reid apologized, calling the posts "insensitive, tone deaf and dumb."[24] After reviewing more posts from her old blog, which she said she did not remember making, Reid asked lawyers to investigate if her blog or its archives might have been hacked,[22] though Wayback Machine, where the posts had been found, said it detected no evidence of hacking in the archived versions of her site.[22] The second batch of posts prompted LGBT advocacy group PFLAG to rescind its plan to give Reid an award,[25] and The Daily Beast to suspend future columns from her.[26] Reid opened the April 28, 2018, edition of AM Joy with an apology.[27] Response to her apology was divided along party lines.[28]

In April 2018, blog posts from 2005 through 2007 were brought to public attention. According to the Washington Post, Reid encouraged her readers to watch the now-debunked 9/11 conspiracy film Loose Change and appeared to promote the forcible relocation of Jews from Israel to Europe.[29] Another controversial post, this one from 2007, used a photoshopped image of Senator John McCain superimposed on the body of 2007 Virginia Tech University gunman.[30] In June 2018, Reid formally apologized, saying she had evolved in the years since she wrote the posts: "I’m a better person today than I was over a decade ago. There are things I deeply regret and am embarrassed by, things I would have said differently and issues where my position has changed. Today I’m sincerely apologizing again."[4] The MSNBC network expressed its continued support, saying in a statement that some of the blog posts were "obviously hateful and hurtful", but that they were "not reflective of the colleague and friend we have known at MSNBC for the past seven years"[4] and that "Joy has apologized publicly and privately and said she has grown and evolved in the many years since, and we know this to be true."[29]

Everytime I hear Elizabeth Warren speak, I like her more. She's really really smart, has great policies, and yet talks so warmly and clearly. No lecturing, just a conversation-- even in a speech.

And Mayor PB, well, I don't think I want such a young president, but in 2028? If I'm still around, he's got my vote.

Joy conveniently ignored that Sanders got a very warm, and perhaps the most enthusiastic welcome of any of the candidates when introduced at She the People. She has it in for him and used her show to torch him and push the narrative that he’s out of touch with AAs and women. It’s just a part of the overall narrative that establishment, Third Wayer, Centrist Dems push about liberals and progressives generally; that liberal/progressives can’t win because they lack voter support so they should get out of the way, fall in line and shut up or else ... the evil Rs will win. It’s one big bamboozle that they consistently try to pull over on the average, not highly informed voter.

The guy in this broadcast is right. They are the ones who are out of touch and disaffected.

was that Bernie couldn't connect with women of color tying it to 2016. When Nina cited evidence of Bernie's strength in the polls, endorsements and how his policies positively affected African Americans in general and women specifically it was conveniently ignored.

Joy gave Nina all of 8-9 seconds before her 1st interruption, same as happened to Bernie at She the People during a televised audience when he was heckled by a few or some (who knows) and it morphed into including all women of color.

Nina put forth some inconvenient truths and Joy couldn't handle it, she was much more respectful of her other two guests.

Tue Apr 30, 2019, 04:34 PM
Apr 2019

Later, former Ohio state lawmaker Nina Turner, the most high-profile woman of color on the Sanders campaign, referred to the audience’s reaction, asking “in what world” was it appropriate for the conference attendees to boo Sanders for sharing his story of protesting with King.

Sanders’s finger wag — and Turner’s talk — suggest the Sanders campaign may continue to struggle to draw in voters of color.

By focusing on a 50-year-old anecdote, Sanders missed a key opportunity to explain what he’s done for women of color in the past 10 years and how he’d tackle today’s challenges. And when listeners expressed their frustration, Sanders seemed dismissive and unwilling to engage. The optics of a predominantly white crowd applauding Turner for chastising women of color only fueled this message more....

In this campaign, Sanders has an opportunity to do better with minority voters. Pushing back on voters who express concern is not likely to win Sanders more support from constituencies he needs to capture the Democratic nomination.
