Maggie Haberman: Trump's Attacks Are Elevating Biden Into a One-on-One Race

https://www.mediaite.com/donald-trump/maggie-haberman-trumps-attacks-are-elevating-joe-biden-into-a-one-on-one-race-between-the-two-of-them/

New York Times’ Maggie Haberman appeared on CNN New Day Tuesday morning and provided her unique insights into President Donald Trump’s recent Twitter attacks against the sudden poll leader of Democratic presidential candidates, former Vice President Joe Biden.

A new CNN poll released Tuesday morning shows Biden with a surprisingly commanding lead among Democratic hopefuls, with a stunning 39% of likely voters in a Democratic primary choosing him as their favorite, over 18% for his closest rival Bernie Sanders.

Haberman is as well-connected to the inner workings of the Trump administration as any reporter so her insights carry more weight than most. In her esteem, there is mixed sentiment amongst Trump’s advisors on whether his Twitter missives towards Biden are a good thing or a bad thing, but none of that matters because Trump himself is frustrated from watching the spike in Biden coverage.

“He thinks what this race needs right now is him shaping it. What he’s doing is elevating Joe Biden and basically turning this into a one-on-one between himself and Joe Biden 18 months ahead of time,” Haberman offered, adding “this is something you’d see a presidential candidate for re-election do in the summer of the election year typically. This is taking place right now. It might not end up mattering, but this is not the way veteran political operatives would handle this. ”

3. They DON'T want to. Trump doesn't want to. He thinks his sniping at Biden will weaken him.

And from what Haberman says, some people around Trump agree, while others, probably the smarter ones, know this is a huge mistake Trump is making.

7. I think Republicans-especially the GHWB want Biden

to be the Dem candidate.

McCain family already backing Biden, George Will, long against Trump, has written a pro-Biden article in National Review; Biden supported a Republican member of the House over a Democratic challenger in late 2018 during the Blue Wave.

The Old Guard Republics are probably going to privately support impeachment and get Trump out. He is now a liability for the GOP.

They were able to get in a lot of Federalist judgeships but if they can get Trump out now and interest in the investigations wanes, they have the opportunity to field a new candidate in the Fall-it may or may not be Pence. and they can beat back Democrats down ballot.

It is a smart strategy.

Trump is telling Sanders 'they will steal the nomination again' and Sanders attacked Biden yesterday on CNN I believe. He want chaos in the Democratic Party like with Hillary. It won't work. We are on to him and the Russians...and Sanders should not attack Democratic candidates...said he wouldn't

Joe Biden has Trump right where he wants him.....on the defensive.

Trump now has a record and Joe Biden is jumping on it right away, which is why he is pulling ahead of the ever growing pack. I think by September, the number of Democrats running will thin out.
