Details
The Poor Peoples Moral Action Congress is being organized at Trinity Washington University from June 17 to 19, 2019 by the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. Nearly one thousand poor people, moral leaders, activists, and advocates from over 40 states across the country will convene on Washington DC for three days to strategize, learn and build power together.
During the Congress, the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival will launch the Poor Peoples Moral Budget that shows concretely how to enact the demands of the Campaign. We will hold a Forum with 2020 Presidential Candidates when poor people from across the country will ask questions about the issues that impact their lives and we will hold a Hearing from those most impacted by systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism and the distorted moral narrative of Christian nationalism who are coming together to organize a movement. On the second day of Congress, participants will join workshops or longer tracks to learn how and why we are building a moral fusion movement.
Come join a fusion movement that is building in more than 40 states and Washington DC shifting the narrative, impacting policies, and building power among the 140 million poor people in the United States.

(1,898 posts)Sanders' address at George Washington University on Democratic Socialism was a watershed moment, to be sure. His campaign is run MUCH better than in 2016. I only would suggest a few tweaks here and there, including the need to have an array of sound bites at the ready to defend Democratic Socialism, which he has begun to create.
Intensifying the focus on poverty as Dr. King did (but Bobby Kennedy also did with great effectiveness), would be my other key suggestion. Bernie already has done so but the Poor People's Moral Action Congress will be an excellent way to turn up the volume further. Naturally, Sanders' attendance at the King March on Washington those many decades ago is helpful.
Medicare For All and a living wage of at least $15 an hour nation wide sounds even more compelling within this larger context. It's important to remind ourselves and the world that the richest nation in history has 40 million of its people living in poverty.
I suspect that this also will be a compelling opportunity for Cornell West and Tavis Smiley to renew their laudable campaign to keep the subject of poverty at the fore.
I also am tickled pink to see Rev. Barber at the front of the march in the photo above! He is the Dr. King of his generation. Few speak of morality with greater persuasion or conviction than he. Rev. Barber is the real deal. I avail myself of every opportunity I can to hear him speak.
