Dear Donald, the safest cities in US have the most immigrants

Snip>"If you want to find a safe city, first determine the size of the immigrant population," says Jack Levin, a criminologist at Northeastern University in Massachusetts. "If the immigrant community represents a large proportion of the population, you're likely in one of the country's safer cities. San Diego, Laredo, El Paso—these cities are teeming with immigrants, and they're some of the safest places in the country."

Snip> Numerous studies by independent researchers and government commissions over the past 100 years repeatedly and consistently have found that, in fact, immigrants are less likely to commit crimes or to be behind bars than are the native-born. This is true for the nation as a whole, as well as for cities with large immigrant populations such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Miami, and cities along the U.S.-Mexico border such as San Diego and El Paso.

Snip> What's happening with Latinos is true of most immigrant groups throughout U.S. history. "Overall, immigrants have a stake in this country, and they recognize it," Northeastern University's Levin says. "They're really an exceptional sort of American. They come here having left their family and friends back home. They come at some cost to themselves in terms of security and social relationships. They are extremely success-oriented, and adjust very well to the competitive circumstances in the United States." Economists Kristin Butcher and Anne Morrison Piehl argue that the very process of migration tends to select for people with a low potential for criminality.

What I really hate! Web pages with titles like: 20 Cute Child Stars Who Grew Up To Be Ugly

Every time I see a title like that I want to find the person or person's responsible and publically shame them. Would really like to see some pressure put on pages that post this kind of crap so they pull them.

Can you imagine if you were one of those stars and saw yourself on the list? Not to mention, many of the people they call "Ugly" look quite attractive to me.

Sorry, just had to vent as I just happened upon one a few minutes ago.

The Confederate Battle Flag

I wasn't real fond of this video until it got to the end. I think what he suggests at the end is a brilliant idea.

Allan Savory: How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change

Edit: After I posted this video I did a bit more research. Trying to be careful about taking sides at this point because I don't know enough about this type of science but here are opposing views on this that I just came across and they bring up some good points about problems with Savory's research.

One thing I do know is that the most healthy ecosystems like the Great Plains had millions of buffalo that moved around. As for the photos in his video however, I have seen desert look completely barren one year with little rain and have no plant life, then the next year if there is a lot of rain, have all kinds of plants sprout up and cover the land, so you have to take his photos with a grain of salt. Also, as the Slate article points out, some deserts are just that, desert and never had grazing animals on them before. Introducing a grazing animal onto land that has a healthy ecosystem is only going to screw things up.

CNN found around 60% of Americans think the Confederate Flag is a symbol of pride not racism

Interestingly enough around 60% of Americans can't name all three branches of Gov. So what does this poll show us that a bunch of Republican websites are touting? Nothing more than the fact that most Americans are ignorant and wrong about a lot of things and what they think about the flag compared to what it actually represents are two very different things.

This Is Where The Opinions Of Scientists And The American Public Split

On evolution, genetically-modified foods, animal research, and global climate change, America’s scientists are almost all going one way—and the general public is going the other.

This graphic from the Pew Research Center looks at the gaps between opinions on scientific issues, by contrasting surveys first given to members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science back in January with surveys given to the general public.

There are some strong opinion gaps, but the most concerning areas are not just those where there’s a gap. They are the areas where a scientific consensus clearly exists—with scientist opinions trending firmly to the right—but where public opinion not only hasn’t caught up, it appears to be strongly divided.
