Obama Goes to Wisconsin in Bid to Oust Gov. Walker

Associated Press
President Barack Obama is making a rare appearance on the campaign trail just one week before Election Day in an effort to help a Democratic challenger oust Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker from office.

Walker is a top target of Democrats in the midterm elections after he angered organized labor by enacting a measure in 2011 that reduced the power of public sector unions in the state. Obama was scheduled to campaign Tuesday evening with Democrat Mary Burke, a former Trek Bicycles executive and state commerce secretary, who is running close against Walker, a potential 2016 presidential candidate.

Polls show the race is deadlocked with very few voters undecided, which makes it even more important for Walker and Burke to get their backers to the polls. Wisconsin hasn't voted for a Republican for president since Ronald Reagan in 1984, but Walker won in both 2010 and in a recall election in 2012. Just five months after that June 2012 recall win for Walker, Wisconsin handed Obama a 7-point re-election victory.

Obama will appear at a high school in Milwaukee, the state's largest city and a Democratic stronghold. Burke must win big there and in similarly liberal Madison to counter Walker's support among Republicans in the conservative Milwaukee suburbs and in rural areas.

RICH: Yacht Big Enough To Play Basketball-If A Ball Bounces Over Rail-A Powerboat Will Retrieve It.

The Richest 400 Americans

In the supposedly classless society of the United States, the wealthiest Americans are doing remarkably well.

According to Forbes, a leading business magazine, the combined wealth of the 400 richest Americans has now reached the staggering total of $2.3 trillion. This gives them an average net worth of $5.7 billion―an increase of 14 percent over the previous year.

With fortunes far beyond the dreams of past kings and potentates, these super-wealthy individuals enjoy extraordinary lifestyles. Larry Ellison, the third wealthiest man in the United States (with $50 billion, an increase of 22 percent) reportedly has “15 or so homes scattered all around the world.” Among his yachts are two exceptionally big ones, each over half as long as a football field. In fact, they’re large enough for him to play basketball while on board. If a ball bounces over the rail, Ellison has a powerboat following along to retrieve it.

Upside of Affordable Care Act: Health care costs down Savings estimated in billions of dollars

Not long ago, the airwaves were filled with predictions that health-care reform would be a disaster for taxpayers and consumers. That hasn't happened.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare, will cut the federal budget deficit by $100 billion despite adding health coverage for about 10 million people, by federal estimates.

...............

The overall federal deficit has dropped dramatically. It's now projected to total nearly $5 trillion less by 2020 than was expected just four years ago. Maybe more importantly, Van de Water says the ACA is improving the health of the vital Medicare program, which is threatened by an influx of millions of baby boomers.
"Medicare will continue to need adjustments, but it's clear health reform has made Medicare's prospects better, not worse," he says.

David Perdue also proud that 'less than 2,000' women sued his company for pay discrimination

#t=2916

David Perdue:
It seems to me that if you look at Dollar General as an example, there was no wrongdoing there. That lawsuit or that claim or that complaint was settled five years after I was there. She knows that. And it was less than 2,000 people. We had upwards of 70,000 employees at that company.

As Nunn responded, "Two thousand women—that actually seems like quite a lot to me." Especially when you consider that the class action suit was brought specifically by women managers, a smaller pool than all of the chain's employees. And when you consider that it was actually 2,100 women. Nunn also pointed out that while the suit was settled five years after Perdue left the company, the discrimination in question happened while he was CEO. It's like how "the statute of limitations ran out before I could be charged with that" would also not be a great campaign slogan.

What's a Dad to Do When His Daughter Wants to Dress Up as Han Solo for Halloween?

... put on a Princess Leia costume, of course.

I'll admit -- my take on Princess Leia Organa isn't 100 percent flattering to Carrie Fisher, but, you know, I made do with what I had. I found an incredibly cool Princess Leia hoodie at HerUniverse.com that came with the trademark Leia hair buns on the hood, which made it hard to resist. The skirt is a Red Cross nurse's skirt from a local uniform store. And the thermal underwear and crappy sneakers? Well, it's Michigan and it was cold and we were going to an event at the local zoo, so, yeah, I dropped the ball on that one. I need to find some better Leia boots for actual Halloween.

IRS seizes woman's entire savings because she deposits less than $10,000 at a time

Law Lets I.R.S. Seize Accounts on Suspicion, No Crime Required

An Iowa woman named Carole Hinders saw her bank balance go from $33,000 to zero thanks to IRS confiscation. Hinders, who owns a small, cash-only Mexican restaurant, has not been charged with any crime and is not suspected of tax fraud. The IRS says they took her money solely because she deposited too little of it at a time, and the agency claims she did so to avoid the required reporting of any bank transaction over $10,000. She says she just thought it was helpful to save the bank paperwork.

Though the $10,000 rule is ostensibly designed to help catch terrorists and drug dealers, it is far more often used on regular citizens who are unlikely to ever see their money returned. "I don't think [the IRS is] really interested in anything," said a lawyer representing another seizure case. "They just want the money."

To keep her restaurant afloat following the confiscation of her savings, Hinders has had to take out a second mortgage and max out her credit cards. "How can this happen?" she asks. "Who takes your money before they prove that you've done anything wrong with it?"
