JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri House endorsed legislation Monday that would require driver's license tests to be administered only in English and would restrict interpreters for those who have trouble understanding the language.
The House's 91-59 vote marks the second year in a row that the body has backed such legislation. Debate on this year's measure mirrored that of last year's proposal, which died in the Senate.
Rep. Jeanette Mott Oxford, D-St. Louis, said the legislation might discourage businesses from moving to the state if they bring foreign workers with them.
"We keep trying to fix problems that aren't there
, and it's just to feed into hysteria about people who are not native-born U.S. residents who speak English as their first language," she said.

"Susan B. Anthony was born February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. She was brought up in a Quaker family with long activist traditions. Early in her life she developed a sense of justice and moral zeal.
After teaching for fifteen years, she became active in temperance. Because she was a woman, she was not allowed to speak at temperance rallies. This experience, and her acquaintance with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, led her to join the women's rights movement in 1852. Soon after she dedicated her life to woman suffrage.
Ignoring opposition and abuse, Anthony traveled, lectured and canvassed across the nation for the vote. She also campaigned for the abolition of slavery, women's right to their own property and earnings, and women's labor organizations. In 1900, Anthony persuaded the University of Rochester to admit women.
Anthony, who never married, was aggressive and compassionate by nature. She had a keen mind and a great ability to inspire. She remained active until her death on March 13, 1906."

Expensive Missouri primary won't mean much
It appears the GOP is sometimes a bit fast & loose with the use of tax payer money, that however should come as no big surprise.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The political maxim "every vote counts" may ring pretty hollow in Missouri on Tuesday.
A series of political squabbles has rendered the state's Republican vote merely symbolic, turning the $7 million primary into a glorified public opinion poll that will play little to no role in determining the party's nominee.
Instead, the GOP plans to use state caucuses in March to begin the process of awarding Missouri's 52 presidential delegates. Tuesday's primary will still be used to award delegates for the Democratic nomination, which will undoubtedly go to President Barack Obama.
Newt Gingrich isn't on the ballot because he didn't pay the $1,000 filing fee, explaining later that it didn't count for delegates.

Editorial: Finally, Ed Martin chooses a race befitting his unique skills

Republican Ed Martin hasn't yet asked for our endorsement as he seeks the Republican nomination for Missouri attorney general, but, as he begins his reconnoitered campaign, we suggest an aggressive advertising strategy.
Mr. Martin, the besmirched ex-chief of staff of former Gov. Matt Blunt, should focus on his personal experience with the attorney general's office. He has a lot of it.
Who among potential candidates other than Mr. Martin can lay claim to being one of the principal subjects of a nearly $2 million taxpayer-funded investigation into whether he helped orchestrate multiple violations of the state's open meetings and records law, which the attorney general helps to enforce?
Only Ed Martin can.
