Daily Holidays - January 22

Hot Sauce Day Are you more of a Tabasco person, or do the spicy chili peppers of Southeast Asia the ones that get your mouth watering? Should hotness be combined with salty flavors, or rather sweet ones? Whatever you believe and whatever your preferences, if you are one of those people who feels that “spicy” is never quite spicy enough, Hot Sauce Day is the perfect holiday for you! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hot-sauce-day/

Answer Your Cat's Questions Day If you’re a cat person, you’ll no doubt wonder what your cat is thinking from time to time. What unsolved mysteries does your tabby ponder, hmm? Celebration of Life Day is when we take a step back and truly appreciate our children and grandchildren. Granted, some may do this on an everyday basis, but it’s an opportunity to look at our young ones’ lives from a different angle, think about what it is that makes them truly special, and of course, to lavish treats upon them if we so wish, be it an ice cream or a trip to Disneyland. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/celebration-of-life-day/

Daily Holidays - January 21

Granola Bar Day Nutritious, yummy granola is typically based on rolled oats full of proteins and useful fibers. It’s been an increasingly popular type of breakfast food since the 19th century, but wasn’t compressed into a snack bar before the 1970’s. There’s been a dispute on who invented granola bars, but Stanley Mason remains accredited for creating this compact form out of loose granola by pressing it. To produce a firm bar, granola is bonded with honey, butter or syrups, and it is then baked. The exception are so-called chewy granola bars which are either briefly baked or completely raw. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/granola-bar-day/

International Sweatpants Day Everyone has one of those days sometimes. You get up, you attempt to go about your life as usual, but you just don’t have it in you. You feel sleepy, maybe your head hurts a little, and the thought of getting all dressed up in a suit and tie or high heels makes you want to crawl back into your warm bed—and that’s okay, we can’t all be feeling our absolute best 100% of the time, right? Luckily, there is a day dedicated specifically to this occasional mood: International Sweatpants Day. So if you know how it feels to just want to spend the day lounging around comfortably in your sweatpants, this is a day you should be celebrating! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-sweatpants-day/

National Hugging Day There’s nothing more reassuring than a comforting cuddle; Hugging Day encourages you to embrace (see what we did there?) hugging, and to give those you care about a comforting squeeze. Lovely! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hugging-day/

National Cheese Lover’s Day Not everyone can match the fans of the Green Bay Packers football team in Wisconsin, USA, whose yellow, wedge-shaped hats are the ultimate in cheesy headgear. But Cheese Lovers Day is a true moment of celebration. Women's Healthy Weight Day One for the ladies, and a day for husbands to squirm, perhaps. Whilst waking your spouse on Women’s Healthy Weight Day to proclaim your whole-hearted approval of her size may garner some testing looks, it is unequivocally an occasion for female empowerment. Though now an international affair, unsurprisingly it originated in the United States, where whooping it up whilst tipping the scales can be done with a unique Stateside joie de vivre. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/womens-healthy-weight-day/

Two taco shop toilers track down Webster tip thief

Every so often, you run into a person who doesn't care for trivia contests — but two employees of Fuzzy's Taco Shop in Webster Groves were determined not to let the haters win.

That's why the two workers, Larry Hardney Jr., 28, and Tim Mnyande, 23, chased down a would-be robber who used the popular Thursday-night promotion to snatch a tip jar, stuffed with about $90, from the store's counter.

The two men chased and caught the thief and then held the man until they could turn him over to a police officer, a store manager said.

Webster Groves police did not return phone calls.

Prevailing wage repeal: a con job

Kentucky voted overwhelmingly to elect Donald Trump president, along with historic GOP majorities in both houses of the Legislature. To win, Trump and Kentucky Republicans campaigned on a lot of promises — including to “create jobs,” and “lift the wages” of working people.

This month, the Kentucky Legislature is expected to do just the opposite, by repealing the state’s prevailing wage law.

Prevailing Wage is the minimum wage for skilled construction work on state-funded projects. There are over 82,000 Kentuckians working in occupations affected by its state prevailing wage — carpentry, plumbing, electrical, pavers, roofers, painters and more. A repeal of prevailing wage would be a state-mandated pay cut for these workers.

More than 5,400 expected to attend Womens March on St. Louis

More than 5,400 are planning to take to the streets Saturday, Jan. 21 as part of a march and rally in St. Louis to show unity in the fight for the rights of women and other marginalized groups.

The Women’s March on St. Louis, which coincides with the national event Women’s March on Washington in Washington D.C., will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown St. Louis. The event is inclusive, and all women, men and children are welcome to attend.

“We are so excited with the amount of energy surrounding the event,” said Valerie Brinkmann, one of the St. Louis organizers. “We encourage all participating to watch the weather forecast and dress accordingly because this event is happening no matter what.”

The theme of the event is: March. Rally. Act. The march will begin near Union Station at Market and 18th streets, proceed east on market and end at Luther Ely Smith Park at 1 Memorial Dr. The route is about a mile, and it’s expected to take about an hour.

Cable Car Day In early 1871 British-born, US resident Andrew Smith Hallidie received the first patent in relation to the cable car, an occasion which is marked by Cable Car Day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cable-car-day/

Kid Inventors' Day Kid Inventors’ day was created several years ago by people who wanted to celebrate the achievements of the youngest inventors as well as encourage more children to be creative. The date chosen to celebrate this day, January 17th, was no accident—it is the anniversary of renowned polymath, politician and child inventor Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. Due to his countless other achievements, many people don’t know that when Franklin was just 12 years old, he invented the world’s first swim flippers, making him a great role model for every child who dreams of making something nobody has ever seen before. Over the centuries, other children have invented many other things we continue to use today, such as popsicles (a very tasty accident!), the trampoline and ear muffs. Perhaps one of the most impressive things invented by a child is the language of the blind now used the world over, Braille. Louis Braille, its inventor, lost his vision in a tragic accident at age 3 and spent his early teen years developing his new language while studying at The National Institute for Blind Youth in Paris. Almost 200 years later, American teen Ryan Patterson also improved the lives of the disabled when he invented a glove with special sensors that translates the hand motions of American Sign Language into written words on a digital display. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/kid-inventors-day/
