Republican disqualified from Dallas County race

A Republican running for a Dallas County a justice of the peace bench was disqualified Friday — months after her husband was kicked off the same ballot.

Ashley Hutcheson lost her spot because she missed this week's deadline to file an answer to a lawsuit filed by her Democratic opponent, Margaret O'Brien.

State district Judge Martin Hoffman issued a default judgment Friday that Hutcheson lives outside the precinct. She remains on the ballot but would not be certified as the winner if she got the most votes in the Nov. 6 election. Early voting began this week.
O'Brien will likely be the default winner of the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, Place 1 position in Garland. The ruling by Hoffman, a Democrat, can be appealed.

Ashley Hutcheson, in an email sent Saturday to The Morning News, termed the process an attempt to subvert democracy.
"This is just another of Ms. O'Brien's desperate attempts to circumnavigate the democratic process and suppress conservative voters," she said in her email.

"The Supreme Court has made it clear that any last minute attempt to interfere with the election schedule with frivolous hail-Mary lawsuits will not be tolerated," the email read.

The office is currently held by Hutcheson's husband, Brian Hutcheson. The Republican incumbent was disqualified after a trial judge ruled in July that he didn't have enough signatures to get on the ballot. He was accused of making up names and signatures to get on the ballot.

Republican spending in the Marchione seat has accelerated rapidly in October. SRCC has transferred Daphne Jordan $364,000 in the past few weeks, and a RSLC super PAC just spent $225,000 to attack Aaron Gladd

Flashback: Melania Trump blamed Julia Loffe for provoking anti-Semitic threats against herself.

Melania Trump, the wife of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, on Tuesday suggested that journalist Julia Ioffe “provoked” the anti-Semitic abuse she faced from Trump fans after publishing negative profile about her.

“I don’t control my fans,” Melania said in an interview with DuJour. “But I don’t agree with what they’re doing. I understand what you mean, but there are people out there who maybe went too far. She provoked them."

Ioffe, who is Jewish, received calls from people playing Hitler speeches, told that she “should be burned in an oven,” “be shot in the head,” and was sent photoshopped images of her in a concentration camp uniform.

In a statement released last week, ADL’s CEO Jonathan Greenblatt urged Trump to denounce the barrage of anti-Semitic comments by some of his supporters on social media. “The onus is now on Donald Trump to make unequivocally clear he rejects those sentiments and that there is no room for .. anti-Semitism in his campaign and in society,” Greenblatt said.
