Kang Colby's JournalBernie Sanders and the High Cost of "Free" College
In other words: these countries are prepared to eat America's lunch economically because they are enlightened enough to have free public higher education.
Enrollment rates: Data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development indicate that the U.S. is tied for 12th out of 18 countries with available data when it comes to the share of citizens 25 and under that enroll in college, at 47 percent. Not so good, right? Especially compared to Denmark (56 percent) and Slovenia (68 percent) two free college countries that rank near the top. However, the countries nearest the U.S. Germany (45 percent), Austria (47 percent) and Iceland (49 percent) have free or very low tuition. And two countries at the bottom of the list Sweden (40 percent) and Finland (41 percent) offer free tuition. (The U.S. is ranked higher on the World Bank's measure of enrollment).
Attainment: Educational attainment tells a similar story. When it comes to the share of workers aged 25-34 who have finished tertiary education, the US is tied for eighth with Sweden, Switzerland and Israel at 46 percent. Korea (68 percent) and Canada (58), who both charge relatively high tuition, are at the top of the list. On the free college side, Ireland and Norway make the top six, but Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Germany and the Czech Republic finish behind America.

Once again, if it's too good to be true....it probably is.
Details of Executive Action on Gun Control Released
https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/01/04/fact-sheet-new-executive-actions-reduce-gun-violence-and-make-ourI just finished reading it, and I look forward to the discussion.
MDA opposes gun safety efforts for children.
https://www.yahoo.com/parenting/kindergarteners-get-gun-safety-lesson-at-school-183507921.htmlI think what the school district is doing is fantastic, but pay attention to the response from Bloomberg's Moms group. If it doesn't involving banning or confiscating firearms of course they have no interest in it. MDA's motives are sickening. This program is optional and parents can also attend.
Gun Stop was first introduced by the Cambria District Attorneys office two decades ago, and is taught each October. In it, students in kindergarten and again in third grade are educated on what to do if they see a gun and how to engage in non-violent conflict resolution. We wanted to teach the course because statistics showed that 80 percent of local home owners kept guns in their home, says Krestar.
But according to Jennifer Hoppe, deputy director of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a campaign of the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, the best way to reduce gun deaths among children is to be keep the weapons out of childrens hands altogether. Its atrocious to put the onus of gun safety onto children this is an adult problem, Hoppe tells Yahoo Parenting. Every gun thats gotten into the hands of a child has first been under the control of an adult. A program that tries to dodge that is disingenuous.
The gun control movement retreats to revitalize itself
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-gun-control-movement-retreats-to-revitalize-itself/2015/10/27/cabf918c-7ce4-11e5-afce-2afd1d3eb896_story.htmlI don't agree with most of this opinion piece, but I do think the notion of controllers citing support from Kim Kardashian as the "tipping point" is pretty funny. Her sister Khloe appears to be a 2A supporter to some unknown degree.
Budget Bill will devastate millions' social security benefits....
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/making-sense/houses-proposed-budget-bill-will-devastating-effects-millions-social-security-benefits/This bill passed the House today, sadly with universal support from Democrats. This is sickening. The race to the bottom continues........but Defense spending will continue at all time highs.
...
Weve been paying 12.4 percent of our income to Social Security since our first job in exchange for a variety of benefits Now, with a couple of sentences, our government is reneging on what for many households can amount up to $50,000 in lifetime benefits.
EDIT: I realize now that a lot of DUers don't have familiarity with "file and suspend". I assume that is part of the reason passing this bill was possible as only folks getting ready to file for SS benefits are paying attention to this tragedy. This uber short article does a good job of explaining jow it works. http://www.aarp.org/work/social-security/info-2014/file-and-suspend-retirement-strategy.html
I own guns. Here's why I'm keeping them.
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/i-own-guns-heres-why-im-keeping-them/ar-AAf9HPr?li=BBieRxqHere is a short essay that I thought many of you will enjoy. I don't agree with it verbatim, but I think he does a good job of providing a real world scenario where firearms are a great equalizer for self defense purposes.
I didn't hesitate to say yes, but I understood that this positioned my girlfriend and me for a potential conflict with a terribly violent man. (Not to mention a man more than capable of hurting us: The first time I met Bobby, he picked me up and fireman-carried me up a full flight of stairs on a lark. Then, as now, I was 6 feet tall and weighed more than 200 pounds. I hadn't been picked up so easily by anyone since I was a child.)
Bobby knew where we lived and, because controlling abusers often limit the number of people allowed in their victims' personal lives, almost certainly knew where Diane sought shelter. I couldn't take him in a fight if I wanted to, and any non-firearm weapon I could use would require close contact and increase my risk of being overpowered, endangering everyone.
Please do not alienate Democratic gun owners
There has been a lot of discussion about firearms in GD over the last week. Millions of Americans own firearms for a multitude of reasons. These people are liberals, conservatives, and every political persuasion in between. There are at least 80 million gun owners in the United States. We own guns for self defense, hunting, target shooting and many other lawful purposes. We are not second class Democrats. To illustrate my point, ask yourself how much gun control was passed between 2008-2010? None.
Before deciding to alienate Democratic gun owners, please read this classic DU thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=118x138850
We need to work together to bridge the gap, and tone down the rhetoric.
Do civilians with guns ever stop mass shootings?
