My mother was left a widow with 3 young children to raise.

That happens.

But when a woman keeps having children knowing there's not going to be a man around (or anyone else) to help with the
expenses and practical stuff, that's another thing.

I remember on 20/20 or some show like that, a young woman in IN who had one child when she was a high school
junior, another the next year and another the next. She wasn't married, and incidentally she wasn't a minority either.
Needless to say, she was poor.
